I just picked up a stainless Win 70 in 7mm mag with the syn stock. Anyone have one of these? Does the boss really help? Because I been thinking of cutting it off, lol My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

I had one in .338 Stainless. I never found that it did much for me and for some strange reason it distracted me. All in all, I didn't like it and so I sold the rifle. to my way of thinking, if you cut them off you have a rather short barrel if you cut the threads off too. A better thing to do might be to make some sort of thing that just covers the threads without being distracting.

You might want to shoot it before you decide. I have a couple of M70's w/ BOSS. They ain't especially purty but they do what they advertise (they are accurate!)

I have several..... Them being no longer made, would cut the value of the rifle down a lot.... They do work for recoil reduction... but not everyone wants that because of the side muzzle blast.... I take mine off at times and it doesn't seem to effect accuracy, but looks cheesie.... So instead I picked up a CR ( Conventional Recoil ) BOSS for about $10.00 from Browning... that screws right on where the vented Boss goes.... The Boss also works as it is desiged to do to tighten up accuracy.... Oh and the CR Boss, getting it for $10.00 was at a shop on sale... I think they are more like $25.00 to $30.00... but it won't decrease the value of the rifle.... and if ya don't want you old Boss, I'll take it off of your hands... I am doing a switch barrel on a Model 70 now, that I could use it on.... cheers seafire

Do NOT cut off the BOSS, whatever you do. They definitely work. My family (myself younger brother and father) have owned roughly a dozen Winchester classic stainless synthetic w/ BOSS over the years (2 .243's, 2 .270's, 2 .30-06's, 1 7mm Rem. Mag., 1 .300 Win., 1 .300 Wby., 2 .338 Win. Mag.). The least accurate of the bunch shoot 1 1/2" 3-shot groups with FACTORY hunting loads, right out of the box. Most are in the 1/2" range, especially for the beltless cartridges. My brother's .30-06 shoots better than 1/2" with factory Federal 180 gr High Energy partitions. They work so well that I actually had BOSS threads cut into my Win. classic stainless in .300 WSM and I added a CR, and now it shoots 1/2" groups with factory Federal 180gr TSX loads. That being said, they are a pain to tune and are VERY sensitive. Literally, a ".1" adjustment of the BOSS can make a difference between a 2-3" group and sub-MOA. It probably takes a couple boxes of shells on average to get one tuned, but in the end this is probably less aggravation than trying to work up a load. If you don't like the muzzle blast, Winchester/Browning makes a "CR" attachment that does away with the muzzle brake feature, but allows you to retain the accuracy benefits.

Thanks guys. Not sure what my plans are for this rifle as I just picked it up for a great price and it looks brand new. But I will leave the Boss on for now. Could make a great rifle for my up and coming son. I am not a 7mm mag fan but with 175gr bullets it will do anything the 300 Win Mag will do with 180's. The previous owner did have all literature saying how to tune it, sweet spots etc. But man it looks ugly, lol. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

Snowwolfe ----- If you will shoot the rifle enough to find the sweetspot of the Boss, you probably will never have a more accurate rifle. I have a group of Elk hunters that accompany me to Colorado each year that I require each to shoot on my private shooting range. This tells me if they can shoot or not, if they cannot and will not practice with instructions and become better shooters, they don't go hunting. Some of the group have been shooting with me for years and several of them have .300 Winny's with the Boss that are fine tuned and will accomplish one hole groups when the shooter does his part. The Boss will do that for you if you give it enough time and patience and you are an average shooter without it. If you don't beleave that, some of my buddies would be glad to purchase your rifle with no questions asked, they have all been there and done that. I reload for some of them, some of them shoot factory, we conclude that the Boss is the difference. Good shooting. phurley

Well everyone has definitely said enough about the BOSS but I need to add my positive 2 cents too. I have a .338 Win Mag M70 Supergrade with a BOSS that turns in fantastic groups with "factory" 225 grain Federals. I've shot lots of .75" and .5" groups with it but the best it ever turned in was a .264" 3 shot group again with factory shells. This was all after tweaking the BOSS which I thought was relatively easy. My only complaint is that the muzzle brake portion of the BOSS is way too loud for hunting so I bought the eliminator for it ( I think it is called a CR ?). My brother has several BOSS equipped Brownings and Winchesters from 22/250 all the way up to .375 H&H, all are really good shooters and we both can highly recommend the BOSS for accuracy.

My stainless Boss Model 70 in 338 shot 7/8" groups at 200 yards.I did have to replace the foller and spring to make it feed. The scope ring screws were drilled crooked and the gun rusted before it was ever taken out shooting. It is very light barreled for a 338 win mag. That barrel belongs on a 243 not a 338 win mag.I like the gun because its light but it does kick without the brake or with the cr instead.I do like Ruger Stainless 338s way better than the Winchester.I did only pay $400 for the 338 winchester model 70 stainless when I bought it.I have been offered up to $1100 with Winchester closing but I might just keep it.A friend borrowed it for 5 years and got three moose with it.I did miss a shot at one of the largest whitetails ever fooling with that dang safety.

Snowwolfe, I went through a rifle identical to the one you purchased last year. After fixing the factory bedding, taking the trigger down to 3.5lbs(it was around7-8!) and running a few diff loads through it, it did well. He wanted me to use the Boss w/o the ports(well it has 4 I believe in the tip) instead of the "loud" one w/ multi ports. The Boss I used didn't help recoil obviously and I cant say it helped accuracy either but, the rifle did shoot well. He was dead set on flat shooting 140s and was taking the rifle Mulie hunting so, I choose the slim Nosler Accubond. The rifle had better speed vs pressure w/ R22 but, H4831 gave the best accuracy from that particular rifle. I was able to get 3100 fps w/ ease and groups in the sub .75 range at 100 and still holding tight at 200. I believe I ended up going w/ 67-68 grains. He smacked a nice Mulie buck at medium range and dropped him. He said bullet performance was good. Also worked w/ loads for 3 other Boss equiped rifles, 2 win 70s and one BAR. Those 70s did quite well and they had the ported BOSS. Once the sweet spot is found for the proper Barrel harmonics for a particular load, those rifle shot well. One of the 70s a 300WM, the owner was set on 150s so, I again chose the NABs since he was primarily focused on deer. I didn't think I could get his rifle to shoot a 150 at first thought but, man was I ever wrong. I composed a load of Rem brass, H4895, Fed 215s, and the 150 NABs. I tried the BOSS at different settings and when I found the spot, it was a shooter for sure. That rifle shot less than 1/2 moa at 200 yards. He called me after he had hunted w/ it for a few weeks to give me a report. He said he had taken around 10 animals I guess from varmints to hogs and mulies and rambled on and on about how great the rifle and bullets performed. I'd say you probably have a good rifle to work w/. If you can stand the ear splitting Boss, go for it. If not, you can always buy one of the non-ported replacements. Good Luck w/ your Rifle Reloader
