The 160gr Nosler Partition gets my vote for the 280.

For 100 yards and less why not shoot a 160 gr round nose or even a 175gr slug.

My vote is with 30378, the Partition is a good bullet. And the 160gr.is a good choice for the 280, 7MM, ect.

The 140gr tsx works very well.Past experience has shown that it penetrates as well as the 175gr partition.

A buddy of mine used his 280 with 160 gr Partitions to dump a decent sized 6 point bull this last fall. It worked extremely well. Especially since he put a great shot on it (i.e. lungs, aorta, and a shoulder). There are a pile of suitable bullets but the biggest part of the equation is still shooting them well. That said, it's still impossible to go wrong with one of the heavier for caliber Partitions.

I use the 160grNP @ 2800fps in my 280 when I have a deer/elk tag. If I was going for elk only & new my shots would be under 150yds, I don't see why a good 175gr bullet @ 2700fps wouldn't work really well. The 150gr Barnes will probably shoot through & would be a good choice but you could just use any 175grSP & do the same thing.

I use a 160Accubond in my 280 Wildcat. From Elk, deer, hog, Kudu it has never failed me.

I now use only Swift A-frames for all of my elk hunting. They always work perfectly at any distance, any angle. Using Swifts, I have had 100% one-shot kills, and have never recovered a bullet from any animal. So, I keep using them.

The 160 to 175 gr NP's get my vote, from ACTUAL use with the .280 rem on a few dozen LG animals over the years. NEVER had a failure with any NP in .284" . My only complaint with the 175's on wildebeest/water buck to elk; The bullets seem to exit and You never can find one to admire. The 175's are REAL penetrators.

If I were going hunting for Elk and only expecting a 100yard shot I wouldn't carry a 280Rem.

I'd prefer a 30-06 with either a tipped TSX 165gr or a 180gr Nosler partition.

But since we are discussing 280rem I'll play along

140gr TTSX would be good.

Frankly I'd like to know why everyone skips over the 150gr partition in the 7mm cartridges...

But failing that a 160gr Nosler partition or accubond would also be good.

Though what's more important is what your rifle shoots well.

And more important than that if you go prepared for a 100yard shot you are gonna wind up shooting at 300yards, just like when you go prepared for a 400 yard shot and end up shooting your quarry at 40 yards....

Sounds like a good reason to build a 358 or 35 Whelen to me. I second the 160 grain Partition in your 280 though.

I would opt for a 160 or a 175 gr. Nosler partition, depending on the terrain I was hunting in...The 175 gr. Nosler is a real killer on elk, and the 160 shoots a little flatter...I'd opt for the 175 most of the time.

I second the motion for either 160 gr accubonds or 175 gr partition.

Have found the 160 accubonds to be deadly and extremely accurate out of a 7mm at medium velocity of 2800 fps. Should work very nicely for the 280.

Good huntin'!

I have killed 4 elk with a M70 in .280 Rem using factory Federal 150 gr Nosler Partitions. I have also taken 5 whitetails, 3 pronghorns, 1 kudu, 1 oryx, 1 springbok and a bunch of monkeys. No lost animals. I am going sheep hunting with it next.

Right track with the TSX... excellent choice..

if you go traditional, non premium...

154 grain SP or RN...with an MV of 2800 fps or so...

160 grain Speer Mag Tip or SP would also be a great choice...

175 grain Hornady SP or RN would also be excellent choices...

I'm with Atkinson!

The Nosler Partition in 160 or 175-grain weight work very well on elk. I use the 175 in both the 7X57mm and the 7mm Rem. Mag.

Last year a friend used 154 Hornady Interbonds. He hit the bull twice with good chest placement at 250 yds. Neither bullet exited and the bull walked uphill and turned back to look at us.I'd use a 150-175 gr Partition or 160 Accubond.I used my 7 RM two years ago and the bull took 3 160 gr accubonds from 150 yds. The first two were thru the lungs full penetration. All he did was turn and look at me like, what was that noise. The third heart shot put him down. They are tough animals use the heaviest bullet you can.

Very true Rob, one reason my dedicated elk rifle is a 338-06. clap
