Anyne use this powder with a 200 gr bullet. Steve's pages says it may be the best. I have been using RL15 and Varget.I also got good Vel. from IMR4064 with the 200 gr.
I like the listings for recommended powders on Steve's pages.Whats your take on this powder?

Seems to slow in my opinion. Need medium fast powder. I would stick with varget or 4064 if I was you.

Not quite but when I was working a lot with my 338-06 H4350 worked very well with the 225 gr Partition giving good velocity and exceptional accuracy.

I shoot 62 grains of IMR4350 with a 225 partiton for 2675 fps with a 22" bbl. You need a drop tube to get in all in. Never shot 200's though

Rob, my best load is now using H4350. Using the 210grNP or Speer 200grsp over 63gr, CCIBR2, I'm getting 2750fps+ w/ very uniform groups right around 1moa or a bit better on good days. It's replaced my repvious best load using RL15. It is slightly compressed, very uniform vel.

All my research PRIOR to building the one I had, and much or most of the testing, I used IMR 4320 with 200 @2909, 215 @2790, and 225 @2670, all in std. chamber, 23" bbl

Top vel. and accuracy IMHO, hard to beat, heavier bullets would likely do a little better say 250/4350 or H414 or H380 combo, and other powders in same burn rate.

BTW, used WW brass and std primers.

I am surprised that no one has suggested IMR-4320 as its an outstanding powder in the .338/06..

Meters VERY well also, never got to try the newer SC powders though, but I believe 4320 is one of the CHOICE powders in this round.

I use 57grs of IMR 4350 in my 338-06. It's a modest load at about 2550fps, I know, but it gives more than adequate hunting accuracy in my rilfe with both the 225gr NorthFork and 225gr Barnes 3X.
Another modest load in my rifle is 49grs of IMR 4064 with any of several 250 grain bullets. This load is consistently at .75 inches at 100 meters.

Thanks Everyone, I've tried IMR 4320 with several bullet weights but other powders have done better in my rifle. H4350 is my current best with the 210 gr Part. I thought something a little faster would be just the ticket for the 200gr.

Other powders that are quicker burning than IMR4350 for 200gr bullets and is worth pursuing would be H-414, RL15, H380, AA-2700, and VV-N550.

Rob,

I may be mistaken, have to look it up sometime, but I MAY have used 4064 in my 200gr loads, if I find out I will let you know, either IMR 4320 or IMR 4064 should do well for a stick powder in 200 gr loads.

2909 fps I thought was a potent flat deer load with ballistic tips. Check the ballistics.

I use 58gr of IMR 4064 with a 200gr barnes X = 2,840 in my 22 inch barreled 338/06. I've killed 10 of the large African antelope and two elk with this load. I've found IMR 4320 and 4064 to be great with this bullet and also with the 210gr and 225gr bullets. RL 15 may also be good but have not tried it. I get close to 1/2 groups with the above load, which make me happy.
It looks like I have to use the new 210gr Barnes TS as Barnes does not make the 200gr bullet anymore. Good luck on finding a load that works in your gun

Howdy,

Well, this is my first post on this excellent web site. I've been "lurking" for about 2 years and I've decided to jump into the forum.

About 6 months ago I too jumped onto the 338-06 band wangon.

I build two 338-06's - one 1903 Springfield - rebored barrel and one M70 SS action with a Pac Nor super match barrel.

I tried many bullets - 200, 210, 215, 225, 250 and 275's. Just recently (last week) I started working with 185, 210 and 225 TSX's.

The powders I've tried have been RL15, IMR4320, H4895, IMR4064 and IMR4350. I've chronographed all of my loads-both rifles. I've obtained excellent accuracy with all powders. The highest velocity with no adverse pressure signs has been with IMR4064. Sub one inch groups have been obtained with both rifles in most of the bullets weights.

Next year I will be going on my third trip to Africa - northern SA for large antelope and one of the 338-06's will be going - which one yet I don't know.

The most consistenly accurate bullet and powder has been IMR4064 and the 210 gr Partition at 2750 +/- fps.

Most of the reloading information and suggestions I obtained off this web site and by using the search function - it is excellent. My hats off to the people that run this site.

This 338-06 experiment has been a lot of fun and very enjoyable.

Adios

Well "Sport"...
Welcome to the forum... and by your first post, I can tell you are an astute man whom knows of what he does speak...

Also like your choice of doing a 338/06 on a Springfield action!!!!

The 223 is like a king sized version of the 223.. actually many powders that will work well with heavier bullets in the 223, will also perform very well in the 338/06...

4064 is my favorite IMR powder in the 338/06, followed by IMR 4895...

H 380 and W 748 also do awfully well, with all bullet weights in the 338/06....

Varget RL 15, and RL 10 also work well in that case..

Howdy Seafire/B17G,

Thanks for the welcome.

I have a total of 4 1903's and A3. The 338-06 I mentioned above and three 30-06's - two I got from my Dad - both turned bolts, drilled tapped and Fajen $30 stocks - my Dad paid $18 each in 1961. The other one is a 1903 in 30-06 and completely sporterized and is just awesome.

I paid $150 for the 338-06 "starter" - $700 latter it is a great shooting 338-06 and looks like it came right out of the 1950's.

By the way - I decided to use my "porn" name for this forum - kinda a joke at work - here's how you get your "porn" name - what was the name of your first dog? Mine was a Brittany Spaniel back in the 1960's - his name was "Sport" and the street I grew up on was "Fulton" St. - there you have it - "Sport Fulton".

Adios

Sport,
Welcome, who did the rebore on your Springfield? I have a sporterized one in 30-06 and I might change it in the near future.I don't think there is a medium burning powder that I haven't tried in the last 5 yrs. except IMR 4350 in 338-06. Thanks for all of your info everyone.
