The reason you are seeing 270m ammo, IMHO is that there are no Para Military rifles in 270.

The 270 is only chambered in hunting rifles, so most preppers are not in the market for 270 shells.

There is not much that a 270 win with a 130gn TTSX at 3100 fps wont handle that you would normally use a 270 for.

I've never known someone who shot a 180gr out of a .270 Win, but then again I'm not a .270 fanatic. Almost everyone I know thinks the 130gr factory loads are perfect for everything from antelope to Brown Bear (and maybe they're correct?).

I currently have a 7x64 here in the house, and I concur it's a great caliber, as is the 7x65R which I used to own in a Merkel double rifle. But the 7x57 traditionally used 175gr whereas the .270 traditionally used the 130-150gr. If the barrel twist in a .270 works for a 180gr, then I say go for it; but most don't.

I'm not necessarily impressed by speed; I like good speed with a big bullet. That seems to work best for me; but we all differ.

Not a Varmint round? I shoot my Sendero with 130 Ballistic Tips on P-Dogs at 500+ yards, especially in the wind. Mighty fine varmint round.

I egotistically graduated from .270win to .270Weath and 300Weath,
then when I better realized the importance of bullet selection & shot placement, rather than just sheer HV,

I agree. I see a lot of 270's in pawn shops thesedays. Nothinig wrong with their performance, just not the latest greatest whizbang trendy thing anymore. I cant tell you how many times I have heard the 06 called "boring" on this forum, I think the old 270 suffers from the same stigma but because of its flat trajectory people are loathe to lable it as "boring".

That's pretty funny right there, I don't care who you are....

the common pistol calibers, 22, and military style autoloader rifle ammo can't stay on the shelf. while there have been a couple autoloader 270s made, the caliber isn't a normal one for the platform

"not popular" ? with out a doubt, its is in the leading 3 calibers in Texas and Louisiana for deer hunting. 270, 243, 30-30, with 3006 and 308 not far behind

You are correct most everyone starts out with a 270 or 30-06 then they move up to your 300s as they wise up then after many years of hunting big game the almost invaribly come back to the 270 and 30-06, they learned the difference was in blast and smoke, nothing more. For the original post, I frequent Bass Pro and Dick's Sporting Goods in this area and there's no shortage of most all calibers you'd find in said stores. Plenty of 223 on up to the big magnums. Using Walmart as a reference is hardly representative in my opinion, but for what it is worth, I have 2 very close and one not too much further, about 10 miles away, and all 3 have several boxes of 30.06, 243, 308, and a few boxes of 7mag, 300 WM.

There's no game on the planet that the 7x57 with a 175 will cleanly kill any better than a 270 will do just as well with a 150, given proper bullet selection for game at hand. Just the facts.

This business about bullet selection needs to go by way of the do do bird as it is really a non-issue. Anyone care to count up, list, mention every available bullet by all makers in all weights in .277? To me, there's so many to choose from it's like choosing tile for your floor. Gives me a headache!

My latest 270 (Stiller TAC300 action, Jewel trigger, Krieger 24", McMillan Edge stock), is shooting a 150 Berger VLD with H4831SC at 3050fps. It started with a Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x44 but I just put a Zeiss Conquest 4.5x14x50 with target turrets on it and put the former scope on my 30.06. Both are heading to CO with me in a month in hopes of filling my bear tag. The 270 is primary rifle as I've not hunted with it yet.





The last pic is of my last 4 builds. On top is the 6.5x284 with a Bartlein bbl, then the newest 7mag with a Krieger, then my twins, the 270 and 280, the 270 is described above. The 280 wears a Shilen barrel that has impressed me from the first shot. I used it to kill my CO mulie and KY deer last fall. 150 Btips at a measly 2750 fps but nice nickel size group at 300 yards. Best I've ever done.

Wish that were the case here. No store, Dicks included have any ammo on the shelf. What little comes in goes out just as quick. The odd exception is .270 Win. For some unknown reason, there were piles of it at two local Walmarts. Makes me almost want to put my 7x57 away and dig out a .270. Almost.

Nice to have the option at least.

You fellas have to remember, I'm in Ohio. This is not a rifle hunting state for big game (deer).

I've settled on the 270 Winchester for my all around hunting rifle. I got a screaming deal on a Steyr SBS ProHunter, mounted a Leupold 2-7x. It does any reasonable thing I might need doing. No fuss, no muss.

I think I have read most of these posts. what I believe to be true was hinted at a couple of times but not said.
There is 270 ammo on the shelf around here too. The 270 is a hunting round. It is not chambered in any WWI or WWII surplus guns. It is not chambered in any AR or gun that holds a high capacity magazine. Everyone going out to buy a first gun just to have a gun in case they are outlawed is not getting a 270 hunting rifle. They are not hording ammo for it for any Zombie invasion.
The hardest thing for me to understand is the shortage of 30-30.

The .270 is my favorite caliber. I like the 130 grains and have taken a ton of game with it including a bull moose. There are a lot of choices out there today and I own and shoot most of them, but when the culling starts I will keep several of my .270s

Here in PA the .270 seems more popular than ever.

I have the same rifle in 270 with a Kahles 2.5-10X50. does not like 130grain bullets but the 140's group better tha 1" and the MzVel is 3050fps no pressure signs. Does not get much better than that.

This would be my opinion for the masses as well. The people who I know that have one is 1) a bolt action, 2) bought it at Walmart, 3) buy their ammo at Walmart, 4) only shot it to sight them in once or twice a year, 5) do not reload.

I skipped the 270 round and went to a .308 mostly because I love to shoot. Reloading brass is readily available. Military snipers use .308s so it couldn't be all bad.
