Forum members, this is my first post. I lurked here for many, many years. My name is Ron, I'm an old geezer. I retired to Suraia, Romania 5 years ago with my Romanian wife to whom I have been married to for 18 years. I live about 25 miles from the Carpathian mountains and like to hunt small game, varmints, Roe deer, red deer and boar. Some of my favorite rifle calibers are, .223 Rem.,243 Win.,6.5x55 Swede, 270 Win., 7x57 Mauser, 308 Win.,30-06 Sp. and 9.3x62 Mauser, Yes, I am a rifle loony. I like the way members here conduct themselves on these forums. Thanks.

Welcome Ron. May I suggest steering clear of the political forum...? Always nice to have new members who will contribute their own stories, knowledge, and insight.

Welcome Ron. I just retired from my second job Dec. 16 so I fall into the same category. Would love to see some photos of your hunts and countryside. I'm in agreement with your choices of rifle calibers and if you can't get it done with those it can't be done. Wink

Welcome Ron from another new comer and fellow expat. I'm a bit east of you in SE Ukraine, not for from the disputed territory.

No guns for foreigners in my neck-o-the-woods, you lucky son of a gun. I would also enjoy your hunting tales.

My bride & I are slogging through the immy process atm and plan to be in Maine in May.

Tnic, we are close. The town I live in is in mid-eastern Romania. Reloading of metallic cartridges here is not permitted. However, there are lots of good factory ammo available. I have found factory loads that shoot well in all 11 of my rifles. When I get around to it, I'll post a few pics and tell about a couple of experiences I have had over here. Thanks again for the welcome. RJ

Welcome. Do they serve wild game meat in the restaurants in Romania? I know that is common in European countries.

Welcome to the forum! It looks like you are in a great area to hunt from what I can tell. Are there seasons to hunting or is it year round?

Great choices in calibers.

Walkinhorseman, yes, some resturants here serve wild game.
Z1r, I also enjoyed Bran & Brasov. The first time I came to Romania (for work), I spent 3 months in Bucharest. It is too big, noisey and crazy for me. That's why I live in the country.
Charlie64, I do not have any "European Specials" in my safes, but when I hunt with the different hunting groups, I enjoy seeing lots of them.
Buglemintoday, yes, there are strict hunting seasons here. Many varmints are year around. Many medium and large game seasons overlap and Roe deer season runs from May 1st to October 15th for male and October 15th to February for female. About the only varmint only time is, late February until May 1st.

A long standing question is how much silver does it take.

And does velocity reduce the need for a full silver bullet.

If one has a JHP and just fills the cavity with silver and drives it at normal velocity is that enough.

Wouldn't the fast expansion cause the silver to enter the blood stream faster.

Or because it is not a pure silver bullet doses one have to driver faster to get it to work properly.

And if one carry's a cross does that add to the effectiveness.

At one time the Germans used wooden bullets, you may be able to find a few of them on AR classified at some point, they worked like a charm on my last vampire or vamp, not sure which. Good luck and don't hunt at night, stick around here we'll enjoy your experiences ina country seldom hunted by the outside world..

I don't know about silver or wood bullets so I'll just keep my 21" African 9.3x62 close by.

Welcome Ron. That's quite a lengthy season for roe deer. Are they plentiful?
How much of a task would it be for a US citizen to hunt a week or so for roe deer there?
Looking forward to more about Romania hunting. Looking for the "right trip" to Europe.
Thanks.
Ray

Welcome sir! I envy you getting to hunt boar on a regular basis! The nearest I ever lived, close to you, was in Southern Bavaria, GA, courtesy of Uncle Sam 72-73. Beautiful country and I ran into several Sounders when out training. I even spent some down in the Black Forest... while I didn't see any Ginger Bread Houses, Werewolves or Vampires...its a good place for them! ha God Bless. Rev Jim Knight

I thought that I had heard once that wooden vampire bullets had to me made from oak.

Also, welcome to AR rj208.

I recall that Van Helsing said to use a wooden stake on Count Dracula and he used one on one of the brides; he does not say what kind of wood.
And any wooden bullets are for blanks or training. Not for service use. I have read the reports of them from WW2. I suspect a lot of misconceptions and mis reporting.
