I am assuming I need to stay at or above 140gr, but I am headed to Wyoming in October for antelope and wanted a little flatter trajectory. Will a 1 in 9 twist barrel stabilize 120gr bullets? If not, I will probably take my 6.5-06 Bailey Bradshaw www.bradshawgunandrifle.com I'm in the gun buildin bidness, and cousin....bidness is a boomin

My 284 Winchester with that same twist shoots 100 and 120 grain bullets very well with RL-15. Try some and see if they work in your rifle. They just might... Don

If a bullet of a particular length stabilises in a given twist, anything shorter will be stable. Longer bullets may not be stable. You cannot err going shorter, only with going longer.

With that twist rate your rifle will stabilize any 7mm bullet on the market. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Thanks!! Can't wait for this hunt as I have always wanted to take a pronghorn, and since i built this rifle, it makes it all the more special. Bailey Bradshaw www.bradshawgunandrifle.com I'm in the gun buildin bidness, and cousin....bidness is a boomin

Kudos on the rifle build! Good luck on your hunting trip!! Now, your assignment is to get some loads worked up!! The 100 and 120 grain bullets available shoot great. Don

Exactly! I've nevver seen a bullet be "overstabalized". My 1-8 260ai shoots 85gr as well as 142gr. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Now that's the news I was looking for! May I ask, just how accurate are those 85's compared to the 142's? Would the 7x57 require the longer boat tail hollow point to keep bullet jump within reason? Likewise with the 260, isn't bullet length in the throat the biggest consideration? I have the problem with my 303 British - the throat is designed for the 215 RN but works well with with 174 spitzers and 150's too but sucks with 125's. But then a 125gr 311 bullet is really short, quite unlike the bullet Bailey will be using. P.S. While none of us will ever see an overstabilized bullet, there is such a thing. What happens is the bullet axis does not follow it's trajectory line at long ranges. Big Deal! Regards 303Guy

You can bet I don't get even close to the lands w/ the 85gr, the rifle is throated for the 142grSMK. Still, @ 100yds, the rifle will print 5rds well under 1/2moa. I seat them so 0.250" of the bullet is in the case mouth. Out to 300yds, just under 2 1/2" but I think the wind at my range beats those little 85gr up. The 142grSMK will stay well under 2" @ 300yds & 1/2MOA or better @ 100. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

Nothing wrong with that! Thanks fredj338. I have been looking at trajectories with different bullets on eskimo and it seems that for long range the heavier SBT's actually shoot flatter with less wind drift. There is an optimal bullet weight for each caliber. E.g. the 168gr SBT 308 is optimum for the 308 Win and I think the 140gr SBT is optimum for the 7x57. But for ranges out to 200m the lighter and faster bullets win - but not by much. Regards 303Guy

The Nosler AB or BT are good long range, bullets. I don;t like the NBT under 200yds in lighter wts. they just come apart too fast @ impact vel. above 2700fps or so, at least the older ones. The NAB, being bonded, will work close or far. In the 7x57, the 150grNBT would be a good 200-400yd game bullet IMO. LIFE IS NOT A SPECTATOR'S SPORT!

I have shot 120 gr. Sierras and 130 gr. Speers in my 7x57s with a 1x9 twist..It seems to work with most of the ones I have owned..They also shot the 175 gr. RN... BTW,the 130 Speer is about the best deer bullet I have ever used, it always gives me a big exit hole (2" or better) and leaves a good blood trail if needed..It works in the 7x57, .280 and the .284 WCF, I don't know about the magnums. The only way to really know is to try them, you will probably be surprised how well they do. The twist thing is not an exact science for sure. Its not even a very accurate rule of thumb.
