Are newer production rifles equipped with 24" barrels? Their website indicates this, but past 270 and 30-06 rifles had 22" barrels. Is it a typo? David

My .270 EW has a 22" barrel. I think it is a typo on Winchester's part. The 24" barrels are usually on the WSM's.

Nope my M-70 EW.30-06 also has a 22" tube. And I love it, an excellent length for an 06 IMO.

Agreed on the .270 I also like a 24" tube. And no not recently I bought one of the first ones that came out. And I will tel, you this about it. It needed to be bedded and re crowned before it would start shooting. I finally wound up ditching that 4x4 of a stock by Bell&Carleson and replaced it with a McMillian edge. It is SO MUCH nicer to carry and shoot now. I shot a 5 shot .55" group with it two nights ago while doing some load development. The new Winchesters have the metal work done right but like most if not all production guns it needs bedding to make it shoot to it's potential.

I guess I'm different a 22" .270 doesn't bother me. I bought mine used about 6 months ago, hadn't been shot much from what I could tell. Printed a couple of sub MOA groups with 130 grain Fed Fusions. Didn't like the stock either, and picked up a McMillan FWT Edge and had it bedded into it. I hope to have a range report soon.

I have 22" barrels on our 270 BDLs and a 26" barrel on my 270 Weatherby Mark V. Probably 24" is perfect, but I can still get a 150g Partition to go 3000 fps out of the 22" barreled 270 Wins wih Federal 215 primers and a case full of H4831. They are scary accurate too with no pressure signs. Regards, Chuck "There's a saying in prize fighting, everyone's got a plan until they get hit" Michael Douglas "The Ghost And The Darkness"

An extra 2 inches might get you a lot more women but the few extra fps won't really make a difference in the field. The deer you kill won't be any deader with an extra 50-75 fps at the muzzle. Leo The only way to know if you can do a thing is to do it.

I've heard shorter equals stiffer and longer can be whippy instead of rigid. I was talking about barrels of course.

IMO 24" is minimum lenght with .270 Win and .30-06.

Beautiful rifle. I really like the looks of the Extreme Weather with the fluted barrel. The McMillan is the perfect touch.

My old 54 family 270 has a 24 inch barrel and I like that old gun, but a 22 inch barrel in a .270 or 30-06 makes more since IMO...If one needs more than that then go to a magnum with a 26 inch tube..I like my 300 H&H pre 64 mod. 70 with its 26 inch barrel for cross canyon elk where ranges are distant... I like the 24 inch barrel on my 3006 too. I don't shoot for maximum velocity but the rifle was designed with a 24 inch barrel and after 71 years it still shoots sub MOA so how can one argue with success? Speer, Sierra, Lyman, Hornady, Hodgdon have reliable reloading data. You won't find it on so and so's web page.

Still a SUB MOA rifle with some loads, however I was surprised to find out how slow it shoots. 2" extra of barrel really wouldn't speed this rifle up much. I put close to 100 rounds down range yesterday between five rifles, I waited until last to work with this rifle. Probably should have shot this one first, shoulder was getting pretty sore in the end. I was only able to really pull off four shot groups out of 11 groups shot that I was happy with. The factory Federal were shots 2,3, and 4 after bore sighting my rifle. That VX3 scope has very accurate adjustments. I then moved on to my hand loads.

I shoot 61g of H4831 with a Federal 215 primer in my BDL 270 with a 22" barrel I get 3150 fps, I use 58.5g of the same powder with the same primer and get 3000 fps with a 150g Partition. Those loads may be too hot in your rifle so please start three grains lower and work up slowly. I thought, the new SC Winchesters ARE bedded?? Mine ( FW, .30-06 ) sure doesn´t look bad. The bedding on my SE even looks great, and the front lug under the rear sight is bedded, too! Hermann formerly, before software update, known as "aHunter", lost 1000 posts in a minute

Only the europeans are building uber quality out of the box rifles today. Even the Super Grade is not as pretty as it could be so it stands to reason that the quality would be lacking in other catagorys too. A well finished rifle from crown to head spacing will shoot great at all barrel lengths but cutting 2 to 4 inches off any barrel will improve its accuracy by virtue of barrel stiffness. This sacrifices velocity / energy / trajectory / etc... Take any 30-06 and run it through a 26" barrel and the velocity numbers go up. Cut off a magnum down to 22" and the difference between an 06 vs its mag brothers shrinks significantly. I have an older post 64 push feed m70 with a 24" barrel in 270 that I have done nothing but bed it into a brown precision stock. It will shoot any brand 150 grain selection into a 1 inch group all day long. It is the most priceless rifle I own because of that virtue. I got a good one, what else can I say. It really loved 56.5 grains of H4831, rem 9.5 primer pushing a 150 gr. nosler ballistic tip to 2975 fps. This load put 5 under a dime all day long. Interesting to note that CHUCK375 needed 58.5 grains to reach 3000 fps. Barrel length does add value! Captain Finlander

I have the .270 in the Extreme Weather version and really like it. It has the 22" barrel. Shoots 3/4" with 130 gr Federal ammo TSX. Very light weight in feel. I am looking for a .300 WM in this version but no luck finding one.
