I would like to know if anyone here has any experience with that rifle calibre. If so please give me your input on the recoil and accuracy from 100 yards and on. Thank you, Juker008

In my oppinion it is a cartridge that has no place in todays selection unless you plan to solely shoot 220g vld bullets. There are cartridges that are much more efficient such as the 300 RUM which is still not as efficient as say the 300 Jarrett or any of the other 8mm cased 30 cal wildcats, but these carts are a handloading only proposition. If you do not handload the 300 RUM will do with 180g and smaller bullets everyting and possibly more with @ 10 grains less powder, which also means less muzzle blast and less recoil to drive the same speed and be more accurate as well. Plus ammo will not cost you $100 dollars a box and will be more redily available. 6x NFR Qualifier NFR Champion Reserve World Champion Bareback Rider PRCA Million Dollar Club 02' Salt Lake Olympic Qualifier and an all around good guy!

I compare it to a top fuel dragster. Not for everyone but a truely performance based cartridge. Not a single ctg mentioned have absolutely anything to do with efficency. At these performance levels efficiency is a joke. Who cares about efficiency? Performance is what your hard earned dollars that you are willing to part with, come jumping out of your pocket to achieve. Get a 22LR. The 30/378 with the brake is about like shooting a stiff load in a 30-06. Without the brake is is like a 375 H&H. My Accumark is a true 1/2 MOA rifle with Retumbo and 180gr Accubonds. The .30-378. . . . ? I was given the task when they first appeared, to take a very nice $5,000 custom to the range for a client, and sight the thing in. Out of all the calibers I have every fired, it was the most worthless piece of garbage I have shot to date! And that's being nice. Too much blast, 6" groups, and the concusion was like getting punched in the nose with every shot. I believe the intense dynamic vibration and the light weight barrel, accounted for the horrible performance. I found it completely useless. And I do not say to be rude, but simply honest. The big .30s are not really meant to take any bigger game than a .30-06 is made for, but just to take them at longer range. If the game is out of range for say a .300 WM, then it's too far to shoot at anyway.

Hi, I visit this site on a regular basis but rarely post. This is a cartridge that I have some experience with so I thought I would give my input. I purchased a Weatherby Accumark in 30-378 in May 2007 and this was my first Weatherby rifle. Before purchasing the rifle I read as much information as I could find about the cartridge/rifle on this site and others, much of that information was negative. I went ahead and purchased the rifle and have been very pleased with it. I am loading the Barnes 165grn TSX behind 114grns of Hodgden RETUMBO and am getting 3575 through my chronograph. I have also been pleased with the accuracy of the rifle, it is capable of printing sub 3/4 inch groups from the bench at 100yrds on a regular basis. It won't win any awards but in my opinion is shoots just fine (and maybe above average) compared to the factory rifles I have shot and loaded for in the past. The recoil of the rifle is not an issue with the accubreak and the rifle kicks much less than a similar weight un-breaked rifle I have chambered in 300 winchester. It's actually fun to shoot from the bench. However, the muzzle blast out of the break is significant and can be distracting, ear plugs are a must. Looking back at the information I read about the cartridge/gun prior to purchase I now realize that many of the individuals posting information had no experience with the cartridge and had probably never even shot one so don't let that discourage you. I use the rifle to shoot whitetail deer and there is no way a person could provide justification for buying a 30-378 for that purpose. On one hand the rifle is loud and expensive to shoot. But on the other hand I can shoot it well and it makes me smile everytime I pull the trigger, so I am pleased.

I have had nothing but good results with mine using N560, H870 and 50BMG with Sierra MatchKings of a variety of weights. 2" groups at 300 yards were the norm when I did my part and we had a much better shot than I at our range who saw 1.4" three shot groups with it a number of times. With hunting bullets, I usually loaded it with Partitions and A-Frames and these would be less than 1" groups at 100 yards with the Partitions being a bit better than the A-Frames. What would I hunt with it? Anything I wanted in the US, but whitetails is what would be on the other end most of the time. Did it kill them deader than my 6mm Rem or 450 Marlin or anything in between - nope. But then again, there is no such thing as too dead. And before someone says "But it damaged a lot of meat!" No it did not - proper bullet choice and placement determines that. A shoulder shot with my Marlin in 35 Remington damaged more meat than any shot I had taken with the 30-378. I will resend my comment then of the caliber itself being inaccurate. I will assume that the rifle I shot had a problem, have seen plenty that did. I'm aslo glad someone has had good luck with them. The barrel on that rifle WAS extremely thin, and probably too much so for any kind of accuracy. Good shooting guys and thanks for your input. Now I will know they are not ALL like that.

It packs a wallop !. With a 220 Si in mine and 114 grains of powder it pushes near 3K FPS plus 4500 FP , It's not your daddy's 30/30 or your uncles 06 what it is , is a dam good distance shooter . I haven't but I personally saw a hunting partner plow an antelope at better than 850 Yd. with 180 grain bullet ( I don't know his loads ) he says they push better than 3200 FPS . Recoil is a state of mind !. Some feel more than others do . What it's not is a 6mmPC but as far as accuracy goes mine will group 5 within 2 - 2.5" at 500 Yd. if ALL is perfect and I can stand my shoulder displacement . It's not a caliber that one shoots all day long nor is a .375 . It will how ever give a thrill each and every time you pull the trigger . Mine has NO BRAKE !. I met a man a few years back at a long range shooting event over AZ way . He had among other rifles a 577 Tyrannosaur which I had never heard of or obviously seen . I've never shot anything that kicked harder than that SOB the rifle was 12-15 lb. . I was then informed it threw 750 grain solids with 170 - 180 grains powder . I politely thanked the man for allowing me to shoot that Arm snapper and Never wanted to see one again . Pain Pain Pain !. When it lit off people on the line Jumped off the ground !!!. Shoot Straight Know Your target . ...

Technically the 30-378 will outrun the rum at equal pressures. There is nothing magic about the rum case design and nothing flawed in the 30-378 case design. The problem is that the 30-378 brass is available only from one source and that source (norma) is known to make pretty soft brass. (Some will cry that the belt is a "problem"which it isn't) Thus handloaders are running the 300 rum at more pressure and easily getting away with it and nearly equaling the 30-378. I bought a 30-378 in a sako when they first came out. It takes alot to get it to outrun my 300 wby by more than about 100 fps. Someday I may rebarrel to a 338-378. YUP, had I known the rum was coming out it would be my choice but I'm not terribly disappointed. If you doubt how far you can push a smaller case and get away with it take a look at the following....here is a guy building a 300wsm that does 4025fps with 125 grainers.....wow! http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2007/09/24/frankli...-a-hit-with-hunters/

Hi Juker, and welcome to the forums. I would advise you contact Mark Thompson. Click here to go to his website. This exact caliber is what he based his $30,000 dollar project on when designing his fixed BDC for a Leupold scope. Rifle: 30-378 factory Weatherby with Criterion barrel (a pull buttoned custom barrel by Krieger). Bullet: 180 Nos. Accubond Powder: Retumbo Desired MV: 3350 fps Many of his kills have been posted here on AR before, by me, and others. Just go to youtube.com and type in 1000 yard antelope, 830 yard elk, 1115 yard antelope. You can watch what that rifle will do there. Mark has a camera set up and it is married to his rifle scope so that he and you can see what the hunter sees before and during the trigger pull. My elk hunting partner has one with the brake and I jokingly said 'I hope we don't see a shooter and if so, I hope I'm not around when you touch that thing off'. We didn't see an animal that day but I checked in with him after the season. He got a 300 class bull in Idaho, a spike in our regular unit in Washington and 30% hearing loss in his right ear. Can't vouch for accuracy but he says if he sees them inside of 500yds, they're down. He has custom reloads with 180gr partitions.
