I have experience with the clones.....not the Remington branded guns however....

Do not buy one without inspecting it first hand.....the wood to metal fit on some were/is simply unbelievably bad!!!

The early ones had laminated wood and some now have walnut wood and some with synthetic IIRC.

If I personally inspected the gun and was satisfied with the way the metal fits the wood, I'd not be afraid of buying it.....(priced right)

I just bought a .30-06 in the Mark X from the classifieds here for under $300.....now why would one want a Remington (same thing) for more?

There are used guns available quite reasonably...

Hell, I'd even buy a WBY for $300. I could probably turn a quick profit at a gun show. They should charge twice as much for WBY rifles chambered for standard rounds. Big Grin

sounds great, cant you just convince Ed to sell me a woodstocked 7lb .240Wby for half the price.

back to the 798:
i have a friend who has a Zastava(.30-06) and he definately think its worth having.
kills moose every year and he doesn't expect more than that from it.

My understanding is that Rem. is buying barreled actions on contract. The final finish is not up to the quality of Mk.X's, and probably not that of other rifles coming out of the mfg. plant. If you don't mind finishing the job yourself, you can have a decent rifle. Is it worth the trouble considering that you're paying Rem. profit on a new rifle?

I'd get a CZ.

If people stop buying the 798's maybe Remmy will be forced to drop the prices back down to where they were when these rifles were Charles Daly! For the 5-600$ stores want for the 798, they're absolute junk. For the 250-350 you used to be able to get Mark X and Charles Daly, they were gems.

If you want one, DEFINETELY inspect every nook and cranny you can. I saw some with horrible machine marks all over the inside of the action, chamber and bolts. Some looked ok...For the same price you can get a CZ550, or maybe even a Ruger if you find a good price.

If you think every possible niche has been filled already, thank a wildcatter!

The simple answer is - NO...
Buy a CZ instead. The Zastawa (Rem 798) is far worse in quality compared with the CZ. It is still a ok workhorse of a gun. You will experience a gun that you will probably newer be able to destroy. It is just like the russian T-43 tanks, they worked but where a disaster in finish and production quality. Only extreme ruggedness saves the day.

I got to look at a 798 for the first time yesterday. At first glance it looked pretty good. The metal polish and blueing was great, and pretty good wood to metal fit. The checkering was awful. The trigger was horrible.

I decided with a good trigger it wouldn't be too bad a rifle.

$595 and $150 for a trigger. Hmmm....Walmart carries the 700ADL for $514.

CZs are nice except for the bassackwards safety.

I've had a CZ 550 and a Charles Daly mauser (Zastava). Of the two I prefer the zastava, it shoots better and it's good old classic mauser, it doesn't have some of the "improvements" of the CZ that aren't really improvements. The trigger was horrible out of the box, less than ten minutes later I had it breaking really nice at 3 lbs. The trigger's fine on a zastava, no need to replace it. I wouldn't pay what remington is wanting for one, but a charles daly zastava or interarms mark X is a heck of a good rifle at a decent price. I bought my daly for $260 when they were closing them out. It's synthetic/matte blued. I got it for a beater loaner rifle but made the mistake of shooting it first. It shoots less than an inch plus it's trim and handles well. As mentioned before the trigger's excellent on it once it was adjusted, which isn't hard at all.

Here's a Daly mauser 30-06 on gunsamerica, it's the same model that I have:

If the "buy now" price is $299and $30 shipping that is a heck of a deal.....one can't begin to shape up a Milsurp '98 action alone for that....

IMO these are great deals.....add details to suit later....3-pos safety.....wood stock if desired.....

I've got more than twice that in a VZ-24 barreled action!!!!!

While I prefer the early MKX with the release in the guard that price is hard to beat. My wife's 7x57 is a Daly barreled action. It will put the first three in about .75MOA just as quick as she can shoot them. Forth & fifth will usually open it up to 1.5" as the thin barrel heats up. I was going to simply use the action and rebarrel it. Shoots so darn well she won't let me touch it.

As usual just my $.02

Do you think Remington is selling many of these? I just wonder how sales are going. I can't imagine they are moving many for the price they are asking. I wouldn't buy one at that price but maybe some folks are. Personally, I think Remington is getting a little too proud of the Model 700 also.

I don't think so.....a lot of bad press has followed them on this move!

YUPPERS......I totally agree here as well

Remington fumbled seriously bring the 798 to market and for a rifle that was already being sold in the states it was an exercise in stupidity IMO. They fumbled even worse with the .45-70 side by side as well.....there might have been liability issues here....but the zastava offering was sold here for twenty years previously......and then they stocked it like a POS!

The quality manager at Remington must have gone home crying every day!

My experienced Doctor D's. At first glance it looked pretty good. But the action was ROUGH and the trigger was awful. For $600 I can do much better. In fact, I think I'd pay about $300 for them NIB---at least that's what they seemed worth to me.

If you're looking for a serious shooter in .30-06 on a Mauser action.....I might be able to move a J C Higgens (FN action) your way.....it's in Vermont now so the freight will be a tad much.....but it comes with a M-70 type safety, a Timney trigger, jeweled bolt, and 3-9 scope.....and it shoots! $400 plus shipping and it's yours......and no sales tax.....

"Not bad" comes to mind at first. The action is rough, the trigger is rough, the fit and finish is obviously not the highest priority. I'm sure it would be a great rifle to use as a base for a custom gun as many Mark X actions were, but it's a little steep in the pricing for what it is. In the same price range you can find much nicer push-feed rifles, including Remington's own 700 SPS.
