I´m looking for opinions/your experiences, on a Mannlicher Schonauer mod. GK in 9.3x62mm I recently found on a gun shop near my home.

My worries/doubts at this time are :

The possibility of scope mounting, side mounts are available from EAW, at a steep cost ok, but the possibility exists.

The security of the split bridge receiver design, is there a possibility of future problems firing the 9.3x62mm current ammo ?

And last, but most important for me, how will the stock drop, it has quite a bit, influence recoil sensation and muzzle rise ? The rifle would be used for drive hunting Boar and Deer, so this aspect of recoil and muzzle jump/rise is important for a quick follow up.

Your thoughts and experiences are important to me, so please let me know what you think.

I would buy a modern rifle with easy scope mounting.

Stock fit is every thing when it comes to hitting moving game.

The only way of testing stock fit is by mounting the gun as you would a shotgun. You should be looking straight down the sights, or close to it, if the stock is a correct fit.

A replica of the Redfield scope mount is available here and is an inexpensive alternative to a side mount. I have one on one of my Mannlicher Schoenauers and it works perfectly.

I have a Mannlicher Schoenauer in 9.3X62 which started life as a .270 Winchester, a cartridge which operates at even higher pressures than the 9.3X62. I have no qualms whatsoever in using factory ammunition in it, although I generally load my own ammunition.

It is equipped with a Griffin & Howe scope mount, which is superior to the EAW, in my opinion, having used both. It positions the scope in the lowest possible position, minimizing the difference between iron sights and scope.

Do you belong to the gun club in Lisbon? I have happy memories of shooting skeet there years ago, and watching a live bird shoot for the first time.

Thanks for the replies,

I agree with the opinion that stock fitting is everything on hitting moving game, I tweak my sauer 202 stutzen in 9.3x62mm, changed sights and added stock hight untill I could do what you describe, shoulder the rifle and have the sights aligned without needind head movement.

My doubts on the Mannlicher have to do with stock drop, and muzzle rise after the shot, I would prefer a straighter, almost paralel stock, but that would mean a new stock and I don´t want to do that.

I live near Oporto, on the north of Portugal, but we also have nice shooting clubs over here. I also enjoy pigeon and helice shooting a lot.

This is a very nice shooting club here in the North os Portugal.

The issue of "felt" recoil is a complicated one: Stock fit and shape are very important, but so is rifle weight "all-up", and its distribution.

What is the OAL of the rifle and its barrel. Those also affect perceived recoil. A relatively short barrel is louder, hence perceived recoil seems more pronounced.

As to the psi being less than a .270 Winchester, that depends entirely on whether the rifle is handloaded, and at what level of psi. The higher the psi, the louder the "bang" at muzzle end.

A 9.3 X 62 is one of my all-time favourite cartridges. And I load mine to .338 Win Mag levels of psi, safely, in a modern rifle. That's not CIP levels of course.

An aimpoint should be a low, quick and uses only one mounting point.

I dearly loved the "old" Manlicher Schonauers, beautifully made from 1908 to the 1950s, but the new ones leave me cold, and like so many German or austrain rifles of today then just seem to be over engineered...

I personally, would opt for a nice Mauser 98 or FN.or even rebarrel a Win. mod. 70 to that caliber....Its a great caliber for sure.

What I would like to do is to find an buy a Norvegian Mauser K98, Cal 30-06 and rebarrel it in 9.3x62, mounting very low and discrete scope bases and mantaining the rest as it is. My little dream.
