What do you folks think about this rifle? Caliber is 7.62x54R. I found one in NRA Excellent condition. Actually, it looks as if it has never been fired, although I am sure it has, for 80 bucks. Buy or pass? RobertD

BTW, the rifle was made in 1942. I forgot to mention that. RobertD

I'm not real fond of the actions, but the 5 I have are all accurate. Ammo is cheap, by the case, and it matches the 30-06 in power. Just clean it good after you shoot it. The ammo is corrosive.

A friend gave me a M38 1943 model rework that had a cracked stock at the toe. I repaired the stock easily enough and now it has become my carry around 4 wheeler farm rifle. It is short, fairly light and fits across the back of the 4 wheeler perfectly. It is a little rough around the edges as are all Mosins but is accurate, rugged, powerful, and cheap. Ammo is plentiful and cheap also. About the only drawback is that the safety is somewhat problematic in being difficult to operate. The M38 is a great utility rifle and good enough for any hunting if your eyes are up to the iron sights. Plateau Hunter

Buy it. They are not beauty pagent winners and the safety is goofy, but performance per dollar can't be beat. I love mine. Just the right length and weight plus that smooth metal butt plate that doesn't hang up on your coat when you need to take a quick shot. As mentioned, cheap ammo abounds and the iron sights are more than adequate for my shooting. maxman
