I've messed with the 35 Whelen for many years, and I hope I'm forgiven for not cronographing a single load. It's just been fun to shoot. I have had three rifles in the chambering, and have only one now, but it's excellent. Last summer I shot some 250gr and the 225 gr Noslers and Barnes, with super accuracy (PacNor barrel on a CZ 550 medium action). Next summer I'll just have to run them over the corny. I have three 9.3x62 rifles, and one 35 Whelen and I like them all about equal. IMO, the 35 whelen and 225 gr bullets are made for each other. Great combo, with 14" twist. That's not something the 9.3x62 can compete with, since it excells with 250gr and heavier bullets.

IMO, one should own both the 35 Whelen and the 9.3x62 in order to settle the dispute as to which is best. I think it's true that if you own both, you will realize it's a question with only one answer. You must have at least one rifle chambered in each, and shoot them often. Smiler

I suppose that I can't deny my preference, if really pressed about it. The fact that I have three 9.3x62s and one 35 Whelen says enough.

One very important thing to keep in mind is that the 250gr Nosler Partition is a much tougher bullet than either the Hornady or Speer.

I could get 2600+ using RL-15 with the Hor. or Speer, but when the same load was tried with the Partition, I got some blown primers and I had to back down quite a bit (to about 2500 fps)using the NP over RL-15. That fact (differences in starting pressures for different brands of bullets and different shapes in same bullet weight)is pointed out by ALL reloading manuals!

Whelenite, is that number right on your case head expansion, or did you mean .0018"?

I'll throw this into the mix, but 2700 with 250 grain bullet in the Whelen I had, was a pipe dream. Rifle was M98 35 Whelen, 24" bbl.

Sorry, mad_jack and Paul B, I have been on vacation for the last week. Of course you are both right, should have been .0018" expansion. I normally feel comfortable with .0025" expansion, but I've been working these loads up in pretty cold weather and wanted a little more margin for when shooting them in 70 degree plus temps.

I was also able to get 2435 fps with the Hawk .035" jacket 275 gr bullet and 2000-MR. Same .0018" expansion, and cases reloaded 10 times with primer pockets still snug.

IF you do some reading on the vintage African calibres around 35 cal, you will find that with bullets around 250 grains and up, softs and solids, at velocities from around 2200fps to 2500fps, there were never any complaints on the killing power of such loads...

Just remember you can't load a pump gun up to the same velocity as a bolt rifle. I would buy some factory Remington 35 Whelen ammo, shoot it through the chrony and then just try and duplicate that velocity, no more.

Federal also has a good factory load with a 225 gr. TBBC at 2600 fps.
