Is it the scope getting hot or is it that the barrel is expanding and flexing the scope ? If you shoot just the bottom barrel of an O/U shotgun that barrel will expand and the upper barrel will flex .

This is an interesting topic.

That clearance of .1" is quite close, and probably conducive to a good "stock weld" by your cheek. However, if firing several shots fairly quickly results in a wandering zero, that isn't good.

I'm planning to "Scout" mount both my K-31 Swiss (7.5) and M39 Finn (7.62 x 54R), and maybe Swede (6.5) and/or M1891/59 Mosin (7.62 x 54R).

None of them will be much, if at all, cooler shooting than your 8mm. I'll sure be interested in comments from others, as well as any further observations on your part.

I've just finished sporterizing an 8m/m mod 98 into a forwarded mounted scope ( scout ).I designed the mounting so the eye piece of the scope clears the action by only about .100". The first number of shots, maybe 10, looked pretty good. After that the bullets started impacting more and more to the right. Lots of possibilities, I know. What surprised me was that the bottom of the scope, closest to the barrel, was far warmer than the top of the scope.

Has anyone experienced this before and is the change in zero really due to the heating of the scope? Yes I know that in a hunting rifle, as this is, there would be no real problem. I also know there are a fair number of possible contributing factors. What I'd like is for anyone who has the knowledge from observance or experience to please share it with me. Thank you 4 ur anticipated co-operation. roger

Good point Mete. Of course I don't know the answer.I have two other forward mounted scoped rifles but they are mounted higher and I haven't noticed this effect. The quetion in my mind is what happens when the bottm of an 8" section of scope body expands more that the bottom. And should a right to left movement be expected? I believe this to be a curiosity ( in this rifle) rather than a problem. Do single shot people experience this happening? roger

The line of sight is probably a 1/2" higher than were the metal sights and the stock is the same one the rifle wore for over 70 years but sporterized. Actually I have a looser check weld. I will keep you informed and if you care to send me your E- Mail address I'll send you some photos of these rifles . roger

Easy way to tell...shot a couple of groups while letting the gun cool off between shots and shoot a couple with a warm barrel....the proof will be in the puddin'...
