Jim,

I, too, recently got into loading the Barnes 168 gr. TSX in my 30-06. My rifle is a Weatherby Mark V Ultra Lightweight with a Zeiss 3x-9x Conquest. My best load to date consists of 57.5 grs. H-4350 and a Rem. 9 1/2M primer in "new" Nosler brass. I seated them to a length of 2.633" @ the ogive. My rifle's throat length measures 2.750", so my finished load is approx. .177" off the lands. I "cheated" a little on trying this seating depth, as I took a measurement from a factory Federal Premium 165 grain TSX loading that shot very well in my rifle. As a starting point, I decided to duplicate it with the 168 grain handload (2.633"). With this H-4350 handload, my best 3-shot group to date @ 100 yards measured a scant .246". Needless to say, my load development hasn't gone any further! I was especially satisfied with this performance since my rifle is so lightweight and has such a small contour barrel. Overall, couldn't be happier with this bullet and load. I have not used it on game yet, but expect it to be my "all around" 30-06 hunting load.

Hope this info is of help to you in your load development. Let us know how you make out.

Regards,

Mark

My experience practically duplicates the above post. I checked my handloading notes, and my best load is 57gr H4350 with the 168gr TTSX. My rifle is an exceptionally accurate one to start with, but this load really turned it on. I stopped load development, used all the remaining bullets in the first box in loading up a batch, and bought another box of bullets for standby. I'm using Lapua brass, and Federal primers.

I like the 168gr TTSX bullet and load so well, that I'm quite sure that my FN 30-06 will never shoot a different load, as long as I'm able to hunt with it. I have lots of 30 cal bullets to shoot, of different brands, but fortunately I have a 300WM Ruger with a factory barrel that seems to not be particular what I feed it. However, I may be selling my odd lots of .308 bullets, (or make an excuse to buy another 30cal rifle) because I tried some 180gr TTSX in the 300, and accuracy was outstanding. As soon as I become sensable about it, I'll probably settle to just one load for the 300 too, which will likely be the 180gr TTSX.

Regards,
KB

Though I'm shooting a Ruger 77 MkII I found 57.6 grains of IMR-4831 was very accurate with the 168 TTSX. With a 22 inch barrel I was seeing velocities right at 2700 fps.

I'm using a stiff cahrge of RL19 under the Barnes 168gr TSX. Velocity is right at 2,900 and accuracy is excellent.
