Had good luck this weekend on a wild hog. My wife saw a hog come by her hunting place after dark. [She was waiting for me to come and pick her up]. Even with the 4x Kahles scope on her Drilling she did not have a good shot on the pig as he stayed in a dark shadow for about 45 min. The next afternoon I went with her and we prepared our plan. She knew where the moonlight was bright on the ground and we placed a watermelon rind on the ground about 50 yards from where we would sit. We are right on a river, so after dark, in short order we had 7 Raccoons in front of us. All of a sudden the raccoons took off back toward the river. We knew something was up as we have seen coyotes and several bobcats in this spot. In about 5 minutes we could see the pig in the shadows about 100 yards away, the same place he had been the night before. He did not stay in view but a few seconds and walked to our left in heavy trees. About 15 minutes later @945PM,CST my wife says "There he is, right in front of us." I looked out about 50 yards and whispered "Where". She replies, "Right there!". I lift my head off the scope and lo and behold there he is 15 yards away, facing to my right. He must have winded us, or heard us, because as I raised the Chapuis he started to trot off. I had the scope on 6x [leupold 2.5x8 heavy duplex] as that is the best combination of magnification and light gathering and I thought my shot would be at least 50 yards. The Chapuis fits me well so when I looked back through the scope and "pointed" it in the pigs direction he was "in" the scope, which was lucky for me as it would be hard to find a pig at 15 yards on 6x in the daylight. I tracked him a few feet and let him have the right bbl. As I saw the muzzleflash the crosshairs were on the pig. He then took off in high gear. The wife said "what happened, did you miss, he was running" I replied "lets go find our pig". Results: He ran about 90 yards, straight for about 70, then ran between 2 trees close enough together to leave blood on both sides, made almost a 90 degree turn and ran about 20 yards. He left no blood we could see until about 3 feet before the trees. We found the pig before we found the blood. The 232 Vulkan hit about 6 inches behind his right shoulder and exited through his left shoulder. The entrance through the gristle plate was caliber sized. There was a 1 inch by about 2 inch entrance hole into the chest cavity, one rib was centered and broken. Inside the liver was slightly damaged the right lung was heavily damaged and one upper lobe of the heart was knicked. the left lung was damaged at the front. There was a 2 inch by 2 inch exit hole in the ribcage, one rib broken on the way out. There is a 1 inch by 3 inch exit hole in the shoulder, the bullet then left a slightly larger than caliber sized exit hole in the gristle plate as it left the animal. There were a few small pieces of lead against the inside of the gristle plate on the exit side. The gristle plate was a little over 1/2 inch thick. All in all I think the 232 Vulkan did a good job. It appeared to hold together well as both ribs were broken in too, with a section missing. I will report on the damage to the shoulder after we finish preparing the meat for the freezer. At the site of the kill I estimated his weight at @ 185 lbs. The hog was a boar, he weighed 205 lbs on my scale. After he was gutted he weighed 160lbs. After he was skinned he weighed 112 lbs. I will let ya'll know how he tastes later as I am going to fix some of him for lunch. If I had not had the Leupold scope with the heavy duplex I could not have made the shot, as it was too dark to use iron sights, quickly on a running [well trotting actually] pig. Thus proving that a scope is a valuable thing to have on a double rifle. JOHAN be sure your friend with the Chapuis sees this, I do not want you to corrupt him with that "no scope on a double rifle nonsense" [ 05-13-2003, 19:36: Message edited by: N E 450 No2 ]

NE450, good story and description of the Vulcan's. I think I would like to give them a go in my 9.3x62 cz when I get it. Still debating over that one. It seems they expand well and also penetrate well. Regards PC

PC I am kind of a heavy bullet for calibre man my self, and you cannot tell a lot form just one kill, but for game under elk sized game I think the Vulkan would work fine. Especially if you are going to be shooting at a distance past 200 yards, where you need some remaining velocity to cause bullet expansion. With the 9.3x74R double I never considered shooting much past 150 yards, but after shooting at 200 yards with excellent results, I am going to try it at 300. I do not think the 286gr. bullets will have enough velocity to reliably expand, so I may try the 270 Speer, the 232 Vulkan, or even the 250 Ballistic Tip, It will depend on "regulation" at that distance and I guess I will have to shoot some water filled jugs or wet newspapers to test expansionat that distance. I had much rather shoot at <30yards than 300 yards, I just like to get close.

NE450 woodleigh also make a 250 gr 9.3 bullet which might regualte well for you. Obviously the Nosler 9.3BT has the highest BC of the group but plastic tips in a nice caliber like 9.3x62 or 9.3x74 well it just does not look right does it

PC you are correct, sir, I jusr have not been able to load any Bal Tips in the 9.3. I have some 250gr. Swift A-Frames but I have not loaded them yet. I have read where people have got good results in the 9.3x62 with the 258 H-Mantle bullet on Elk, but I stil like heavy bullets. But the 250 Swift might be good for a Montana bear hunt [spot and stalk, no baiting allowed] if I "had" to take a 200 to 250 yard shot... Then if you bumped into one close up [I killed one bear at <15 yards with the 400 double]you would still have a stout enough bullet.

Hi NE 450 No 2! I had alwas good results in 9,3x74R and 62 with the H-Mantel(not in 9,3x64) but now i will test the new TOG (Torpedo Optimal GEschoss) See here: http://home.snafu.de/l.moeller/8x68S.html#Brenneke%20TOG
