Partial to the '06. Grew up w/ it. Kinda like chevy vs ford. Use FN Mauser bolt from the '50's and Garand. Love the Garand. She shoots sweet w/ peep sights. Also breakin in son's Grandpa's custon 1903 Sprinfield. Sweet.

I bought a Stevens 200 in 270 Win. It.s my long range rifle. I have a Marlin 1894 44Mag for close work.
If I think my shots will be out about 125 or so the Marlin gets to go. If I think the shots will be longer then the Stevens gets to go.

The only way to know if you can do a thing is to do it.

Around here the woods are tight so the ranges are fairly short plus the blacktail deer are small so I shoot a 300WSM. It only weighs 6 3/4 lb all up so the recoil isn't too bad.

Ya don't have to load em full power if you're just shooting deer.

Husqvarna .270 Win or Rem CDL .260 Rem mountain rifle. The CDL is particularly good in a blind since it is short and handles easily.

The Savage 110 in .30-06 has never let me down for Whitetail. It's my 'go-to' gun and I don't feel guilty having her afield if the weather gets nasty.

When suffering from nostalgia, I've been known to drag a .30-30 lever gun out to the woods if it's not bow season.

The smell of black powder pushing a .50 cal projectile from a smoke pole can be gratifying, and one of these days, I hope to bag some game with a .44 Mag handgun.

Recently, since I did not get a Black Bear in the sights of the Marlin 444, curiosity got the best of me and I decided to see what it would do for the procurement of venison. Whoa boy... no problem tracking after that shot.

More often than not, it's my Savage 1899H takedown in .303 Savage or it's twin in .22 HiPower.

If I'm in a more "muscular" mood I reach for a Mauser pre War-style sporter in .30/06 with Weaver K3 in a G&H QD side mount.

The trick to using the F-150 is to just clip in the head. Then nmo meat damage. LOL. Big Grin

The bottom-line gun here is Model 70 in 7mm magnum, Leupold 3-9X and 140-grain handloads. It has its imperfections but they're not deal-breakers.

for many years my deer rifle has been a .270WIn, but this year I am having a 6.5x47 built and my .270 may be replaced by a .30-06 (or AI)

My deer rifles include:
.243 Win
6.5x55
.308 Win
.30-06
.35 Whelen
.44 Mag
.45-70

Of those, I use the 6.5x55 or the .308 95% of the time. It has more to do with the rifles than the cartridge their chambered for though. The 6.5 is a 96 Mauser sporter and the .308 is a Savage Model 99.

Id just get a little Win 70 in featherweight chambered in 270, fit it w/ a set of talley light weights and a little 2.5x8 leupold.
Work up a 110 TTSX to about 3600 fps. w/ rl-17 and You got the perfect lightweight far reachin deer rifle package.

In summary of the above .... there is no predominant cartridge that answers the question. So, was it a valid question or just a question anyway?
