Kimber 8400 300 H&H Question

I posted this topic in the gunsmithing board but wanted to see if any medium bore readers could help.

"I just thought I post this topic to see if anyone's gone down this road yet. I have been looking at getting a nice 300 H&H. I think the pre 64 winchesters are a little too rough in their factory configurations for my tastes and expensive for the really nice ones. I really like Kimbers rifles and I have already called the custom shop to see if they could put a 300 H&H together but they said no to any rifle projects (pistols only)! I was wondering how difficult it would be to convert a Magnum 8400 to 300 H&H? I believe they use this action on their 375 H&H's. My thoughts would be I could put together a nice 300 H&H with above average wood, CRF, nice trigger and a new barrel for under 2K? This would get my foot in the door while I save up for a true custom build someday and would cost me about the same as a win 70 300 H&H in above average condition. Any thoughts on whether this is possible or is the action just too short?"

Thanks Brad Smiler

Talk to Jim Kobe, he post's here. But I think you would only need to change the barrel out.

Unless your dead set on a Kimber I would just buy a new Winchester Model 70 Supergrade in 30-06 and have it rechambered to 300 H&H. Open bolt face, new magazine box, bolt stop and your good to go. It will shoot way better then the Kimber or the pre-64 Model 70's and look better then either.

Aaron:

you might be on to something. I'm going to check this out more. Saves me getting a new barrel on the kimber.

Only trade off on this is barrel length - make sure that 30-06 you buy has the barrel length you want for the 300 H&H. Remember, it isn't going to grow on you but it will shrink a bit.

Hi Robert,
The pre-64 Win 70 had a 26 in barrel. Then later most all the new magnums were being made with 24 in barrels. Now the fad is back to 26 in the larger calibers. You'll loose about 35-50 fps per inch of barrel length. Some folks want all the length they can get and others want a shorter lighter rifle. No right answers that will work for all.

Brad, I would like to know which way you decide to go. I am a big fan of the 300 H&H and am consideriing doing what I suggested. Be nice to have a 300 to go with my 375 H&H. With those two guns you would have all you need to hunt most anywhere.

There's some nice old Remmy 721's that shoot like a house on fire in the H&H. I have one and put on a 26" #5 Douglas barrel, trued the action, bedded, and lightened the trigger pull to 2 1/2 lbs. It'll clover leaf 180g Accubonds.
