Got this a while ago, and trying to find some information on it.
Mainly, I'd be interested in when they made these rifles, for how long, and how many were built?
Anyone got a clue?

It is marked "BSA", built on a P17 action, chambered for the .30-06, and has a fairly nice stock with cheek piece and very crude open sights. It is also drilled (four holes) on top for scope bases, and on the right side of the bridge for a peep sight. Grip cap and butt plate also have the BSA logo.
Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks Alf.
Serial number is H16248. Is there some relevance to the prefix that I should know about?

have this same model rifle #H93xx. Not in quite as good a shape as Pettson's. But a perfect bore and wonderful shooter. have added an old Lyman peep (ebay) and a 1907 style sling. perfectly happy with the old Eddystone/BSA 30-06. Please excuse my photography.

These rifles sold in Canada for just over $100.00, possibly $125.00, in the early to mid 50's. They are solid rifles and a bit heavy. The metal changes from the military action and bottom metal alone would cost considerably more now than what the rifles were being sold for then. Great candidates for making into almost anything you desire if you don't like the calibers they show up in as made. Most shot quite well.

Actually I've been thinking about redoing it, since the original chambering seems to be somewhat of a waste on all that metal... Wink
But since it is in good shape I haven't really decided yet. I don't think it has been used much. I do suspect that the barrel might have been shortened though.

Swampfox, how long is the barrel on yours? And where can I get a 1907 sling?

My guess is the barrels on these rifles are replacements. Nothing but Brit proofs on mine that I can see. The original length was 26"; mine is 24". Also no evidence on my barrel of any blue loss/protection due to the long military handguard. The action is an obvious refinish as well, with that plum color.

Can't put you on to the sling at the moment. Mine came off an ancient SMLE I bought off the used rack. I will keep an eye out for one.

Here's a better pic:

Also, I did find an inspector's mark underneath the barrel just ahead of the forearm "vp" in an oval. Anyone know if this is a US inspector's marking, or a Brit one? There is also a small triangle with a line in it right next to that mark.
