Has anyone loaded the 180 grain Hornady .357 180 grain HP/XTP in the Whelen? I am looking for an interesting load to toss at close range coyotes and perhaps small whitetail does. What kind of velocity could this bullet be pushed at from a 22 inch barrel? Thanks in advance for the insights and advice.

I would recommend you call the folks at Accurate Arms and ask for Yohan. He is there main powder specialist. My recommendation for a bullet would be a Hornady 180 grain Single Shot Pistol Bullet. .358 diameter Ask him for a load using XMP 5744 I would speculate some where between 30 to 36 grains of XMP 5744 but get the offical data from them. Should yield a velocity range of 2000 to 2400 fps. The single shot pistol bullet has a thin jacket and is designed to expand at low velocities. Designed for the 35 Remington in a T/C Contender pistol. A load Accurate does list for a 180 grain bullet is for AA3100. Min - 58.5 Max - 65.0 Powder AA3100 Primer CCI 200 Case - Remington PSI - 24,000 Load is compressed. Hope this helps Phone number for Accurate Arms Powder Company is: 1-800-416-3006
