jens poulsenwho has what..?? Poll.
After reading many fine post of you all here on this forum, it apears to me that european and british sportingrifle cartridges are getting a second life these years after many years in the closet. It could be interesting to hear/see how many has what?.
I started out many years ago only to shoot american calibers(having over 35 winchersters lever actions + some bolts)..but now i only have one rifle left ..a pre-64 winnie custom in .270weatherby. The rest is 8x57 mausers,
300 H&H, 333 Jeffery and a .416 Rigby.
Oh..I forgot a modified lever action win1895 in 45-100.How many rifles do you have that shoots a european/british cartridge regardless if its an american rifle.I only shoot american calibers.Yes..I have some.I only have european/british calibers.

phurley5Well I screwed that vote up. After I voted that I shoot only American calibers I realized that one of my favourites is my #1 Ruger in .416 Rigby. Sorry for my tempory mental unstability, if that is a word.

Good shooting.

Thomas JonesI shoot the 7X57 and the 6.5X57. Would like some more of the euro stuff. 8X57 , and a 9.3X62 or X74 would be real cool ! I have a bunch of american stuff.

SnellstromI mostly shot "American" for the majority of my life ( 30/06, 30/30, 32, 300 Weatherby, 22/250, .284 ) but about 6 years ago I got a 375 h&h, then a couple of 6.5 Swede's and now a 9.3x62.
20 May 2007, 18:56
.366torqueI currently have: 257AI, 308 Win, 300 WSM, 338 Win, 9.3x64 Bren & soon a 416 Rigby.
The 7x57 is the staple in my family, but we all have other rifles in American chamberings too.

thismortalcoilI've shot the 6,5x55, 7x57,7x64, 8x57 and 9,3x57, but the current stable is only running americans at this point. It will most likely change, just give it a chance.
20 May 2007, 20:34
vapodogWhile most of my rifles are of American design I do have 6.5 X 55, 7 X 57, 8 X 57, 9.3 X 62, 300 H&H, .375 H&H, and .404 Jeffery. No anti European bones here!

Jens,
I own several metric and British calibers:
7.62x54r
.303 British
6.5x55
8x57JS
I also have a 7x57 and 8x68s that need to be finished. I'm waiting on a friend of mine to get his FFL so I can be his first customer and hire him to finish them.

About 50% of the rifles I now own shoot Euro or Brit cartridges. This ,however does not tell the whole story. If it were based on good cartridge designing only, my off shore percentage would be much higher. Age , recoil, cost factors, style of shooting and rifle & component availability are also major desiding factors.
Case in point; the .223 could have been designed a little better ( like the .222) but it is here , accurate low recoil rifles for it can be had, compenents for it have been abundant, quality produced & priced fairly. European cartridge design efforts to enter this portion of the market have been shallow at best.
Although the marketing hyped new cartridges in the USA offerings bring little to the table, their influence on sales at least in the short haul has reached fair proportions. This of course also affects the Euro to US ratio.

Finally found someone who agrees with me on the .223

. Why didn't they just use the much better designed triple deuce (one of my all time favorites)??
I even got to pick on the Colt engineering liason back in '67 when he was visiting an organizational Maint. officer course I was attending @ Ft Knox. He agreed, but said he & the rest of the AR-15 engineers on the govt contract were given no input on the design. They were having some feed & extraction problems at that point, along with occasional pressure spikes rendering the guns useless in combat. They pretty much got the problems worked out.. eventually, but I think they would hav been more manageable with a better designed round.

I guess I'm the only one strickly using metric cartridges.

The current stable is a 7x64, an 8x60S and two 9.3x62's.

interboatI can't think of an American cartridge that is not a poor substitute for a German or British cartridge.
I have only Mausers, so it's obvious:
1909, 6.5x55
1909, 7x57
1909, 7.65x53
Vz24, 8x57
Really, I keep racking my brain for variety. But I'm having trouble finding anything better than the 6.5.

The 30-06 is truely an epic hunting cartridge. The 8 x 57mm fills the same nitch.
The fact is though, the 06 was designed as a military cartridge. We probably should have copied one of the existing by 57mm catridges. Had the Garand been chambered for the original intended cartridge for all we know the 30-06 might be in the same demand as the .280 is today.
Better still we could have saved a lot of brass, black walnut, steel, powder, copper, lead and aching muscles if we had copied someting like the 6.5 Carcano with a 115gr. bullet. We,d be using it today and be millions ahead. Thank you Dugout Doug, or was it "Cop Out" Doug?

Interesting viewpoint; obviously intended to generate discussion

I love the European cartridges; esp. the 8X57, the old 9.3X72R & many of the single shot rounds. That said, I can't think of a single German or British cartridge that can't be adequately replaced by an American cartridge (factory or wildcat)

Idaho SharpshooterBrayhaven,
there is not much to bridge the gap between 35 Whelen and 416 Remington invented here in factory. The 9,3x62 may be the best Euro invader since the Beatles!

Very true.( almost). Nor is there a single US cartridge whose performance can't be duplicated by an off shore cartridge. I'm talking actual field performance and not just numbers on paper.

El DeguelloHmmm. Is it a European round because it ORiGINATED there? How long do American factories have to make guns & ammo for a caliber for it to no longer be European? The 7X57mm, .300 and .375 H&H, and .416 Rigby come to mind. In addition, there are some, such as the 6mm Remington and the .280 Remington, for which there are almost exact duplicates that originated in Europe (the 6X57mm Mauser and the 7X64) many years before the U.S. copies.

Maybe on the military rounds and up, but the US owns the varmint rounds. I cant think of any Euro 22's, except the metric version of the Savage round.
Who invented the 22 long rifle?

I can`t either except for the 5.6 x 61 Vom hofe , 5.6 x57 , 5.6 x51 which all comes in rimmmed version too.
The europeans have never had the termonology such as "varmintcartridge" in their lineup.
Perhaps things are seen differently overhere??

.366torqueAaahh! The 5.6x57, a 7x57 necked down to .224. With a very thick case. It's equal to the 220 Swift. With 7x57 brass or similar it'll beat it soundly. Think of the 224 Clark. It'll do 4300 fps with a 55 grn pill. 4000 fps with a 63 grn pill.

seafire/B17GI shoot 4 different Euro Calibers, and wish I had a good rifle in the 303, but I am not interested in an Enfield Mark 4... I'd love an Enfield Pattern 14 tho!
Instead of singing the virtues of Euro calibers... the best thing I can say for something Euro over Something American.. is that I just LOVE MAUSERS!!!!
