I hope this is not a stupid question but can anyone tell me what benefits this system adds to the gun?

Muzzle brake? (noise maker)

You can un-screw it (thank goodness)

That is a most excellent question. It has nothing to do with aesthetics. It effectively reduces barrel length to 20 inches. It places extra mass in a location where it is detrimental to easy handling. None of these is beneficial.

If you want a muzzle brake, it's there. Actually, the Boss is available without the muzzle brake (no holes.) The idea is (was?) to be able to tune the barrel to factory loads. Probably works as well for those reloaders who don't want to be bothered with load development.

If you e-mail Browning, they will send the instructions proudly explaining the thing and how to use it.

The boss system is designed so you can tune the riffle to the ammo and not the other way around. It changes the length of the barrel making a difference in the harmonics as a bullet exits. I like mine, I have two ends for it, one with a muzzle brake and one without.

You can also buy a Barrel Deresonater - the rubber donut that does the same thing. It's shown in every Eastman's Hunting Journal episode I see. Not sure how you can bag a trophy animal w/o it.

I used a similar device on my tennis rackets - worked great!

It's not possible.
The other thing did wonders for my tennis game.

Well I have several rifles with BOSSes on them..

they work as they were sold to do...

recoil reduction... tuning the barrel for the load...

as said above, they also have a non vented one, for regular recoil.. it still can tune the accuracy of a load...

and I also have a Barrel Deresonator... they don't do the same thing.. the B/D is a load of marketing BS.. thank Godness someone gave me the one I have...glad I didn't pay good money for it...

I agree with Seafire 100% on this one.

With a B.O.S.S. attachment you can tune your rifle to shoot the best groups possible from whatever ammo you have available and your barrel. I have two of them, one on a .223 and the other on a .22-250, and they do in fact enable me to do that.

If you don't want a muzzle-brake you can buy a B.O.S.S. without the brake portion. They don't have to be noisy, you just have to make the choice. You can even change your mind after you have one, and buy the other (vented or unvented) tip for the device, whichever you don't have but decide you want.

Some people I know locally get cheesed because making one work takes a little effort and thinking on their part to succeed. Well, its the same way with Ferraris...if you can't drive a stick shift, some little old lady is still gonna blow your socks off. Just owning one isn't quite enough. With either a Ferrari or a B.O.S.S., you can have an advantage if you learn to use it right.

Another nice thing is, because they are graduated in easily read numerical markings, once you find the proper setting for a particular load, you can always go find the right settings for another load and then come right back to the first one if you want to. Of course you have to write down what the setting was, but most of us can probably handle that chore.

Does anyone make a decent replacement trigger?
