The compromise load i am working up,
In hopes of getting a very usable load in my 2 .308 rifles , is off to a good start.
The load i was testing is win case federal primers, Speer 150 grain Hot core over 46.5 grs of RL 15. My savage 99F gave a chroney reading of 2747, and
3 shots came in at 1.10 inches. i fired 1 round with the charge up to 47 even , and the Chroney read 2799. The savage has a 22 inch barrel.
I would gleefully hunt any deer with the lighter load, but that's 4 grains under book match, so i think i will try 47.5.
The 20.5 inch barrel on my CZ 557, was predictably about 50 to 60 ft slower with both charge weights, 2714 and 2741. But it put 3 shots into .538. lazerd to 103 yards off sand bags from the hood of my Jeep.
I was pressed for time, got to play my guitar at a high school reunion tonight.
After the 1st group i did not shoot as well.
And the forest is still to dry for comfort even at sun up. and it was getting warm fast.
I will need a little bit shorter OAL as i had one round hang yo in the Savage mag.
I would expect the 47.5 grain load to get me the velocity i am after. If the Accuracy does not fall off much on the savage, i will be done.
This shoot gave the opportunity to test my new 3X9 Leupold VX Freedom against the VX2 2X7 on the Savage. The VX2 is one of the last ones made.
I do not see any optical fall off in the 100.00 dollar cheaper VX freedom.
I hope there is something usfull here for some of you guys.
