What's the biggest game you've taken with a non-magnum 7mm (e.g. 7mm-08, 7x57mm Mauser, 7x64 Brenneke)?
Please also mention the bullet used if you have the info.
What is the biggest game you'd feel confident and comfortable taking with a non-magnum 7mm?

I'm not looking into becoming a new Bell, but the 7mms tend to have sterling reputation so I'm quite curious.
I posted the same regarding 6,5mm on the small calibers forum. Oughta be interesting to compare notes!

It wouldn't be my first choice but my son has taken two elk with my 7mm-08 with 140 grain Swift A-Frames over RL-19.

i use the hornady 139 interlock.
it runs 2750 in the wifes x57 and 2850 in both my x57 ackleys.
yeah i can go faster in the ackleys.
but i've taken deer, elk, and a moose with this load combo.
the wife shot one buck facing her in the collar bone it exited and went in the ribs of a buck behind it and exited the neck.
the shot was just over a hundred yards, and i wasn't with her. but our two neighbors showed me where it occured and my range finder showed 115 yds to the gut pile.
rl-19 is the powder of choice here also.

Three red stags with my 7x57R using 156 and 175 grain bullets.

Only deer & antelope w/ 140gr bullets in my 280, but w/ 160gr NPs @ 2800fps, I would feel ok on elk size game under 250yds. It has been on elk hunts but no shots.

I've taken Elk with a 280 and my 280PDK. With the 280 is was a 145 speer gs. With the 280PDK it was 160pt and 160 Accubond. I have also taken Kudu and Nylgai. The 280PDK will be equal to factory 7mag.

My wife uses her 5x57 for everything. Elk, Oryx, deer, springbok, hogs, etc. The only bullet we use in her rifle is a 140 accubond. Only thing she shot twice was a cow elk simply because it didn't drop and she was concerned it would walk off a steep drop. At 250yds the Oryx near leg was broken the heart almost cut in half and off shoulder broken.

A Big Scrub bull that happened to be heading in the wrong direction when we were mustering other cattle to go the other way so shot angling forward into vital triangle from behind the front leg.

Put in a brainer as security since they can get very agro but he was already dead.

I wouldn't recommend it as the calibre to go after them with, it just happened to be the gun at my side at the time.

so far only deer with a 7 X 57.....my .280 is destined to improve on that.....now let me find some wood to knock on!

Two elk with 7mm-08. Cow with 140 TSX and bull with 140 partition.

Shot two bison also with 7mm-08 both with 140 TSX. Young bull took 2 shots. Cow of 900 lbs took too many shots, maybe 6-7.

I shot the top bull Elk with a 150 gr partition out of a 280 rem. He went a grand total of 5 feet and I hit him twice.

The second one I shot with a 280 AI and a 140 gr TTSX. I hit him three times and he went a whopping 20 yds.

I got my neices onto moose that both fell to a shot each from 7/08's and 150 rem corlok I loaded for them.

I have shoot and killed many big Red Deer and Wild Boar here in Patagonia. With a 7x57 and 154/162 grs bullets(Hornady SP, Speer Mag-Tip, Nosler P, RWS KS, RWS TIG), and 173/177 grs bullets (RWS H-Mantle, Hornady SP, Speer Mag-Tip, Nosler P and RWS TIG).

All worked great!

Here in finland isn´t so seldom that guys shoot bears and finnish moose with 7x57 or 7x64.

I have an old 280 Remington Semi-Auto handed down to me. I shot a tree trunk with it! I'm pretty sure I killed it (it didn't move a bit!). I had the x-hairs dead on a large muley only 50 to 75 yards away. Squeezed off a round and hit the stump about 3 feet to the right and about 2 feet below my point of aim. I get razzed about it to this day! Never picked up that rifle again.

I have shot Fallow deer & red Stag with my Kimber 7mm08 using 150 TSX & 120 XBT. Also Himalayan Tahr females weighing about 120 lbs.

Numerous nilgai and elk with my 7x57 loaded with 160gr TSX's at 2650 fps.

Elk and kudu with 160 partitions and a bit of H414. Kills them quite dead. 7x57 of course.

One was at 220 yards and the other at 175 yards.

Big Bull Moose in the Cassiar district.
Shot was 225 yds.
160 gr NPT from a 7mm Rem mag.

My first ever big Bull Moose (to my knowledge there are no SMALL bull moose), in the Swan Hills of Alberta. 7x57, with 139 gr. Hornady spire-points and a case full of IMR 4350 at 180 yards. Shot twice, but either would have killed him.

Put the first bullet completely through his chest (both lungs) and opposite shoulder from one side. He turned around and faced the other way showing no sign of being hit, but not running away either. So, I did the same to the other side. He just stood there for about 30 seconds (seemed like all morning and part of the afternoon), then fell over with all four legs stiff before he fell. Looked just like an animation of "cow-tipping".

Between shooting him and his falling, I actually sat down and said to my hunting partner who was already seated "Well either he's dead and doesn't know it yet, or I'm missing him. Either way, no sense in shooting any more."

I've killed four or five elk with my .280 Rem and 150 NP's.
Used the Rem 700 in RSA and took a mature blk wildebeest with 175 NP's.
My wife has killed two cows with her 7mm-08 and 160 gr Speer's.

2 elk, 150gr Nosler Partitions, 7x57mm

One bull moose with a 60 inch spread, .280 Remington with 139 grain Hornady Spire Point. 15 deer with 7mm Weatherby and 160 grain Nosler Partitions, 16 deer with 7-08 Remington. The moose was a one shot kill at 250 yards.

I've killed two moose with my 7mm using 165 grain Nosler Partitions. Both were high shoulder bang-flops.

Kudu, Gemsbuck, Black Wildebeest, Warthog,
Impala, Springbock, numerous Blesbock, numerous deer, Hartebeest. All taken with 7mm R Mag loaded with Barnes X. All DRT.

The biggest with a 7mm mag was a big bull moose, the biggest with the 7x57 was nice mulie. The 7x57 was loaded with 139 grain bullets doing 2830 fps.The 139 passed through at 125 yds.

Got this cow with a 167yrd shot with 140gn Sierra GMKs from my 7x57, doing 2550fps (47.8gn RL19, CCI BR2). She dressed out at 118 kilos. Mind you, where I hit her, a .222 would have gotten her: right between the ear and eye



Saddest thing, it was just last week... wish I was there still!

A good bullet in the right place works well.

Three elk with 7X57 Rigby and 160 grain Nosler Partition.

My daughter took a 5 point bull elk with a 7-08 and the 140gr XXX, My other daugter took a black wildebeest with the same rifle and the 139 gr Hornady. One shot each.

The hog below succumbed to a single 120 grain TSX through the top of the heart and was the 2nd largest I have ever taken, weighing in at 353 pounds on an old farm scale.

The bullet was launched from a 7mm Bullberry at a sedate 2650 fps, and the range was around 80 yards, if I remember correctly.

The buck in black and white was taken with a 130 grain Sierra Single Shot Pistol bullet at 2505 fps MV. The range was 108 yards, and the recovered bullet -- also pictured -- penetrated from the frontal chest to the left ham.

The other buck was taken with an old-style 140 grain Nosler Solid Base (lead-tipped). MV was 2480 fps; range was 90 yards.

The biggest feral hog I have ever killed, a monster by my standards. I didn't weigh him but he was 6 feet long from nose to tail, his head was so heavy I could not lift it. I was using the 160 gr. Sierra Gameking pushed to 2500 fps out of my 19 inch 7x57 barrel. I hit him high in the shoulder and the bone breaking loud crack that came back to me as the boar dropped was pretty impressive. This pig was black and white and when I first saw him he was so big I thought it was a cow, thats how tall he was. No exit and he was one foul smelling old boar so I dragged him off to a ravine and fed his chronies and the coyotes with him.
