Yesterday, in a moment of weakness, I bought a Kimber Longmaster Model 84 in 308 Winchester. 24" stainless Fluted match barrel, pillar bedded, Claro stock, 7.5 lbs nekked, $829.00 out the door. It's on layaway, so it will be a month before I get it up running.

Well, to make a short story long, I could not buy a rifle without a proper scope, as it would be un-american, and let my fingers do the walking through my favorite scope vendor sites, like SWFA, Bearbasin, Optics Zone, et al. Did not really know what I wanted, so just window shopped.

In any event I cruised GunBroker, and I found a new Leupold 3.5x10x40 VX III LRT M1 30mm tube Duplex reticle for only? $659. With only twenty minutes left in the auction, I clicked the buy now button, and I have the scope on the way, before the rifle has even got to my greasy hands.

Now I have a rifle almost, and a scope almost. In a fit of panic, I ran to the gunroom, to see what I could find in the die draw, bullet draw, brass draw, primer draw and scope parts bin.

Luckly, I found 50 once fired Federal Gold Medal Match 308 brass, 100 lake city match brass of questionable linage, about 100 Nosler 165 grain Partition, 40 odd 150 grain Nosler Partition, and the like amount of Barnes 168 grain XLC BT, and about 150 Nosler 168 grain match HPBT. I also found about 3000 Fed 210M match primers, and an old set of RCBS 308 Competiton dies w/ jet black finish, that I forgot I had.

In the base and ring department, I found a set of Warne Premier Bases and 30mm medium Lever rings that I had off a Cooper Model 21. Imagine my supprise when I found that the same Warne stock number fits the Cooper 21 and Kimber 84M.

The spending frenzy satiated, and loading components found, bases and rings confirmed, I await my deliveries and take pride in a spending job well done.

Since I already bought, or found all this stuff, you gentleman can now tell me what a great or terrible choice I made. Now where is my old 308 load data.......

Congrats Bob! Sounds like a fine rifle. I drive by the Gun Room (Buckhorn Rd) twice a day on my way to and from work. Not good for the wallet Happy shooting!

Shadow, I wish I had this rifle and you had a feather up your behind. Then we would both be tickled. Good choice. The .308 is a dandy and Kimber is good company. They will take care of you.

Sounds like you had a good day (even though your credit card probably did less well ). It is good to pamper yourself now and then . Have fun with your new toy!

A friend of mine bought this exact rifle. He mounted a Leupold 2x7 on it. It shoots and handles very well. I think you made a good choice!

Great purchase, Shadow. Kimber is a quality rifle for sure...sakofan.
And a .308 is terrific caliber for these Carolina deer we have here, no?
