I was out in the woods today, With my .308. It was raining like hell so instead of seting up targets and getting formal, I decided i would just plink 3 rouds at a thin tree limb. The tree is long dead and about 50 or 60 yards away, and I just opend my truck door and stood on the gravel road , and fired off hand. The 1st 2 rounds each trimmed about a foot off the limb but the third either missed or went through without breaking off a piece. Really quite satisfying. The rifle is a pre 64 featherweight with a 3X9 Burris FF2. The rifle is not origional the stock has a recoil pad and a previous owner did a real nice neet job of engaving his last name a SSN# in the bottom of the pistol grip. When I got home I droped the barreld action into another stock I had from similar rifle. It looks a bunch better, I then went out and bought 50 brass and a new sling and swivels for her. Hope it likes the new stock. but if not the old one will do. I think I might put a VX3 Leupold on it, either a 1.75X6 or 2.5X8 and find a great deer load for next year. I almost dumped this fine rifle shortly after I bought it as neither varget nor RL-15 would give me good accuracy, I am glad I decided to try IMR-4064 cause its quite good now. Yep from point blank to 350 yards the .308 is prety hard to beat for deer sized game...tj3006 freedom1st

I agree. I used a 308 in the 80"s as my go to gun then "graduated" to various Magnums. A few years ago I went back to .308 for 90% of my hunting as it works as well or better in the field than does anything else that I I used. It is also far more efficient than most and shines as a thinning five caribou from the herd rifle. Caribou-Moose it's all you really need though I still tajke the 358 Norma out during Moose season.

As much as I regard the 3006 as a benchmark,I certainly could live with a 308win to cover most of my hunting needs. With advent of advanced bullets, its a dynamic versatile little round that can be made into a dynamic versatile little rig. Feeling different rigs at SCI&ACGG, the little GMA & HartmannWeiss Kurtz felt great. One could fit a Polygonal bore tube to it to ring as much velocity out of the thing as possible without having to stoke the pressures excessively. A 150tsx-180mrx at 2900-2650 respectively, from a neatly compact packaged Kurz with 21.5-23" tube, certainly has bite to match its bark. To be honest, I do not see what major advantage a 30/06leadcore180-220gn has over a .308win-180tsx/mrx, regardless of situation.

If I had not gotten hooked on the 7mm08 many years ago I would more than likely be shooting a 308. It is a great caliber to hunt with and shoot tirelessly at the range. Have fun with it.

The only problem is that the "little" GMA kurz action weighs more than an original Oberndorf magnum Mauser. That action is in serious need of a Weight Watchers class. The one shown in the photo has been cleaned up a lot. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

Thanks for the replies, the velocities you are mentioning are not unreasonable with a standard 22 inch .308. Published data gets right about there. I had a 7mm08 and my smith has built a beautifull one on a sako L-579 I would love to have. But mine was a A-Bolt micro huter and it was prety nice, but other than a we bit less recoil I can see no advantage, to the 7mm08. Both great Rounds, I might have my smith build me a 260 just like the 7mm08 he has in his dissplay case , I have an old browning sako .243 in the safe now and thats a prety good start...tj3006 freedom1st

My favorite cartridge. Killed more deer with it than anything else. Have had several savage 99's(wish I still had them), a couple of bolts and my late grandfathers winchester model 100 in .308win. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

You are right. The 308 is one of my favorite calibers as well. Every time I get stupid, I look at the three sitting in the safe and think I will sell one...then I wake up and just realize it was a bad dream. The youth in our camp already used my Micro Hunter to take his first deer ever this year. I resented the 308 as it replaced the famous 30-06 so I have had one for only about 20 years. On top of that I took it hunting and sure enough some nice buck ran on me and I mowed it down. Sure wish I had the 358 that day. Today what with my want for a lightweight the 308 Kimber Montana is now my #1 deer/black bear gun. Join the NRA

Indeed it is. There are calbers that have flatter trajectories, such as the WSMs for example, but if you know your bullet path for your 308 load, there ain't too many a critter going to get away on you. (Most calibers hit within 10" of one another at 300yds anyway) Your're not going to impress anyone by saying you got a 308 WIN, but it does the job in the hands of a true rifleman. Combine this with the availability and popularity of components & load data, and it is even harder to beat. BTW: Hogs don't like my 155gr Amax M1A load.
