Shoot Sammy, sounds like a perfect candidate for a DSAF shooting!

That dates back to when the US was determined to make a man killer out of a varmint round. They upped the bullet weight without adjusting the twist so the bullets were in fact unstable. But the shitheads tried to pass that off as intended for greater letality. And seeing how little that average citizens know about ballistics, they were believed.

the_captainI used to work at a gun shop in town and we had another older guy behind the counter there as well. Well-meaning but uninformed. He owned a laser bore sighter and offered to help customers get their rifles bore sighted all the time because "if you use the laser to sight it in it will be right on target all the way to 1000 yards". Evidently this was true for all rifle/caliber setups too, because I heard it every day.
The guy wouldn't listen when I explained that he was wrong so I always tried to pull the customers away and tell them the truth... It's too bad that people new to the sport are fed such purely wrong information by the people they are buying the gun from and depending on for advice.

RothkeOK, local dealer. I purchased a Rem. 700 PSS w/ Leupold Mark 4 50mm scope, bench/sniper setup. All told, about $3 K into this rig. New.
Sales guy says, "Let me bore site this gun for you."
Sets it up on the stand, inserts the collimator, and then . . .
TWISTS THE ELEVATION KNOB ENTIRELY OFF THE $1500 SCOPE.
What's even more distressing is that he doesn't realize that when he does this, all the gas fill in the scope bleeds out and it needs to be sent to Leupold for service.
Did I mention that it's a 100 mile round trip drive to this shop?

You just need those new super premium gravity free bullets!

A similar line of thinking from my good friend Hal....
Hal : Did I ever tell you about my buddy that decked a mulie at 700 yards with one shot?
Me : Nope, 700 yards you say? That's quite a shot Hal. Did your friend tell you this, or were you there to see it?
Hal : Oh no, I was there, most incredible shot I've ever seen.
Me : I'll bet. So how far over did he hold?
Hal : What do you mean?
Me : Well at that range he'd have to aim high and thus hold over the deer.
Hal : Oh no he held dead on him.
Me : Ummm, Hal I hate to question you, but he'd be sighted in several feet high at 100 yards to be zero'd at 700.
Hal : No I think he was zero'd at 100. He is shooting a 300 Win Mag and they're really fast.
Me : (Disgusted at myself for even discussing this for this long) I guess he must have used gravity free bullets.
Hal : (Dazed and confused look)
Me : (Also a dazed and confused look that a fellow electrical engineer did not understand that gravity also applies to bullets no matter how fast they leave the barrel.)

jstevensMany years ago, I ran a gun store in Mo. and purchased a lot of Winchester stuff from Grafs in Mexico who were Win. distributors. Right before the deer season I was over there picking up some stuff and Tom (Bob Grafs son in law) was sighting in a few rifles for customers. I know it's stupid, but it wasn't uncommmon for either of us to sight in 30-40 rifles a year. We sat down at the bench, I was about ready to squeeze off a .270 when an old man carrying a Marlin 336 walked into my field of view about 25 yards in front of my target. Fortunately the rifle was a new Winchester that had about an eight pound trigger pull, so I was able to hold off. When I raised my head, the old man opened fire on my target from about 25 yards offhand, firing as fast as he could lever the .30-30 rounds into the rifle. By the time we got there he was looking at the target which had about 5 holes in it scattered over about 14 in. at 25 yards. He just looked at us and said 'any one of those would have killed a deer' and walked off ready to hunt I guess. We almost died laughing, hopefully we wouldn't be hunting next to him on opening day. Maybe not the stupidist thing I've ever heard, but he was plenty stupid.

If he shot at you and missed, how the hell did he get to court alive ?
In other words, why didn't you shoot him ?

Been many decades since there were public ranges in Mexico but my friends describe one they went to that had shooting "lanes" marked with lime. The range was live at all times and you could walk down to change targets anytime you wanted; just don't step outside your lane!

Sid-I was at Bass Pro Shops earlier this year and wanted to look at a new Winchester M70 made in the Columbia, SC plant to check it's fit and finish. The salesman looked at me funny and asked what I meant by that. I told him I was curious about the quality since FN took over production of Winchester rifles because I wanted a new Safari Express. After a bit more detail about Winchester's misfortunes over the years and change of management/owner's and the closing of the New Haven, CT plant he told me I was crazy. He said Winchester has never been in financial trouble and has never stopped production of any M70's nor are any made in Columbia, SC. He went on to say Fabrique Nationale was not affiliated with Winchester or Browning. He told me he had been a gunsmith for over 30 years so he was right no matter what I had heard. I just had to laugh and walk away.

prof242Last night, a salesman at Sportsman's Wharehouse was talking to a lady about a handgun and told her that a big caliber would make her flinch (quite possibly), and once a flinch developed, it could NEVER be cured!

HomebrewWas in a Dick's Sporting Goods and saw a guy looking at a Marlin .45/70. The clerk at the counter told him "yep, that is pretty much as big as it gets. The .45/70 will kill anything including Mack trucks. I wouldn't shoot it though. It will break your shoulder." Sadly the customer appeared to believe him.

The "well meaning" older guy was ignorant because he was a ballistic idiot, and was no doubt ingnorant when he was young. Such willful ignorance is not a common characteristic of the aged, as such. But it is quite common with dumm youth who sometimes live to be old.

AtkinsonFriar, my man, the dumbest thing I have ever heard is that you did not believe your friend..
Come to Idaho and shoot rockchucks in the snake rifle canyon..In certain locations it will lift a 22 or 6 mm bullet as much as a foot and a half at 100 yards in those thermals or updrafts, even on what appears to be a fairly calm day....
It is a common practice here to take a unknowing friend to these canyons and watch him go crazy trying to figure out how come he keeps shooting high on easy shots..It is intertaining.

Wow, that'd be interesting! No more waiting for slow pokes to go and change your target. Must be quite loud 10 yards down range with shooters touching rounds off on both lanes beside yours.
