the Model 30 was a sorter version of the P14/17 built by Remington during WW1. They had a lot of parts left over, so they sold them as commercial sporters, for about twenty years, lot's of parts left over, I guess). Originally just a P17 with a sporter stock, over the years it was changed to cock on opening (striker shortened), bolt sleeve trimmed shorter (twice, 26 and again in 30), firing pin lightened, had the bridge milled down (hole welded in, if required), the floorplate straightened, the trigger interlock removed, a Mauser guide key system added (the 30S), an extra gas port in the bolt, and a higher grade stock and trim (also the 30S). The 30 Express was still sold along the 30S with the cheaper stock and trim levels. On the early versions there was a much smaller version of the military peep sight on the receiver. the trigger was avialable as a single stage or double stage. It was probably the premier North American big game rifle until the Model 70 showed up. All this info comes from Stuart Otteson's book. Available calibers were 30 Remington, 300 Savage, 30-06, and 300 H & H. Maybe 303 British. HTH - Dan
