Hello from Norway, and thanks for an excelent forum. I am in the process of buying a Remington 700 BDL in 338 Win Mag, and I was wondering; is it possibel to chamber the 340 Weatherby in this action? Probably a silly question, but I figured you guys must know.

Welcome
Shouldn't be a problem. The BDL will handle the length without a problem. If you are just asking about rechambering your 338 to the 340 that I'm not sure of. I would need to plot the dimensions. I'm sure someone knows.

As usual just my $.02

As ramrod said, the action will work and unless yo have some kind of ultralight barrel you should be able to just have the chamber reamed for a 340 and you'd be good to go. I'm all about going big, but most of the folks here are probably going to sing the praises of the 338 Win Mag (which I don't particularly care for) and question your decision to rechamber to 340. Smiler

The 338 Ultra would probably give you enough of an advantage to justify the jump.

Ditto, Magazine length handles cartridges 3.6 inches in length. However, if your .338 isn't one of the 700 w/ a 26" barrel (most 700 are 24") the gains you will get from teh .340 aren't worth the trouble, recoil or powder.

I did this a custom gun w/ a heavy shilen barrel in 24" length. The .340 just didn't provide enough difference - less than 100 FPS. The barrel went on to become a custom pistol and the action was sold.

I agree....and further a longer barrel is of minimal benefit too...

Go ahead and rechamber...it'll work just fine. But don't expect much in return.

Thanks for all your excellent input. Have given up the idea of the .340. But this means that my plan of getting two different barrels, one in 7 STW, and one in 316 Rem. Mag. will work. Thanks again. Big Grin
