I found 3 boxes of 130 gr. .277 diameter in some boxes I haven't opened since I moved 14 years ago. How should I load them, how reliable are they? Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.

Very relieable, I never had any trouble with them. I have a copy of Barnes # 3 so let me know what powders you are thinking of I will give you the charge reanges. One thing I would do is take a thin piece of wire or a paper clip and check the hollow point cavity. Some folks have found that the depth of the cavity varied greatly and sometimes was barely there. This led to some specualtaion that this could have been the cause of the poor expansion. Check the cavities on each of the bullets and if there are non existent or shallow cavities set them aside and use them for load development. Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Will do the wire trick. I have at my disposal H414, AA 4350, Reloder 22, H380, IMR 4350 and IMR 4320. I think I would like to try one of the 4350's first. I have a lot of H414 and H380 though. I have 3 270 rifles, should I clean the one with the smoothest barrel to the level of immaculate before testing? Are top velocities needed or can I get away with 2900-3000 fps levels? I bet I can get a hog test done maybe this week even. Leftists are intellectually vacant, but there is no greater pleasure than tormenting the irrational.

The Barnes x were absolutely reliable. The problem tended to be shot consistency in many rifles. I had a 300 win mag in a Ruger #1 that absolutely loved the XLC's. Once they added the annular grooves, that seemed to take care of the problem. GWB

Barnes lists 51.0-55.00 as the range for H414 as well as both I & H 4350 Velocities ranges are all basically 2900-3100 +/- 30 fps. I would pick one of the 4350s and load 1 round @ 51.0, 1 round at 52.0, 1 round @ 53.0. If I saw no presure signs I would then try 6 rounds at 53.5, 54.0, and 54.5 and fire 2 three shot groups and see what you get. Of course if you see pressure signs stop shooting that load. Pick the best group and then load up three more rounds @ .4 below, .2 below, .2 above and .4 above and see which is the best and call it good. Start @ 50/1000 of the lands. I did the wire trick and came up with 10 out of the first box with somewhat shallower Hollow points than the others, not a big difference but some anyway. I have to prep some new brass and will start with the AA 4350 I have on hand. I think I will test them in my Model 70, an older very smooth barrel.
