Are Fed 215 primers a good choice for the 270? I have a ton of them for magnum rounds and would make my life easier if they worked for the 270 also. Thanks.

bull-d,

They are probably not the #1 choice or the optimal primer for a .270 Winchester(?) unless a ball powder is being loaded instead of stick or extruded powders but if the load is worked around the 215's - why not?

I've every understanding for those who may not want to purchase additional reloading supplies, have stocks of particular items on hand, powder storage and all the other reasons why a particular component is being preferred over the other.

A friend gave me 3,000 CCI Small Rifle Magmum Primers. I adjusted the .222 & .223 loads with the primers and used them all - worked fine.

Primers aren't exactly the most particularly expensive reloading component nor take up alot of specialized storage space but if you've got 'em - shoot 'em, I wouldn't let them sit around and collect dust just because they may not be the perfect Benchrest primer for shooting one-hole groups with your .270 loads although they'll probably work just fine.

Cheers,

I use IMR-4350 as a breakpoint. IMR-4350 and faster burning, I use a standard primer. Anything slower, I use a mag primer. Some thought should also be given to load density.

I use 215s in my 270 loads and they are one hole groups. I load both IMR4350 and IMR4831 with 130gr sierra game kings around 3000fps with excellent results.
Like Gerry said, if you have them use them,

I have used a bunch of the Fed 215's in my 270 with zero problems. I did not see any significant deterioration of groups either. As Gerry noted, I can confirm that they a good match for ball powders, having used more than 1 8# keg of the old WW785( I loved the stuff), lots of H450 & some BLC2. I have used them with 3031, 748, 4064, RL 15, 19 & 22, AA3100, IMR & H4831, 7828 & H1000 in the 270 & some other overbore calibers searching for that perfect combination. I would be surprised if you were to have any problems, but would like to hear about them if you did. Further, I have put most of these over a chronogragh over the years, have never noted truly significant performance variation.
Also noted a new loading from the factory recommending the MAG Rem primer with 4320 in the 270. I believe you can use your 215's with a clear conscience!

Assuming you work up the load for the particular rifle I see no reason not to use them! I use them with R22 and the 140 grain Accubond with excellent results.

They should work OK. I use Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primers in my 270 loads.

I've never used the 215's, but CCI 250 magnums are my 1st choice for the .270 win
