Here's a link to a weaver single piece base, and another for a set of QD rings.

NECG is also the way to go for irons. Most of us just don't need an adjustable set, we can't shoot them much beyond 100yds, JMO.

It seems that the scopes with large objectives sell very well. I don't want one however. Perhaps you have a special reason for such a large objective then go for it.

I use 2-7's on my Featherweights.

Don't bother with iron sights. Just bring along another gun or scope for a back up.

The best factory-made detachable mounts I've ever used are Leupold's QR mounts. These are simple, extremely tough, precise, reliable, and for me they've gone back to zero every time. I had a set on my old 458 Win. Mag., and I couldn't fault them in any way.

I like them MUCH better than Leupold's QRWs, which are made for Leupold by Warne.........

Allen,

Whats the downside with the QRW's?

The QR mount promises repeatable accuracy:

QR Mounts• Remove and reattach a scope using our QR mount and still return to within half an inch of the original point-of-impact on the target
==========================================================

The QRW brings Leupold accuracy to the cross-slot format:

• Steel detachable accuracy mounts that are based on the familiar cross-slot design

• Use the QRW mounts to achieve detachable accuracy

They are not as precise, they are not as well-made, and that crossbar tends to batter the slot in the base over time. I had this happen on a 375 H&H that was setup with QRWs, and I got rid of them.

But the QRs never change. I put several hundred rounds though my 458 Win. Mag., all full-power 500 gr. loads, and these mounts have never changes in the slightest..........

Thanks for the precise reply. Either something works or it does not.

I have noticed that the heat treating of the mount components has mattered on other designs in the past.

I have used the standard Weaver aluminum bases and rings on a .358 Win Featheweight for years and have fired thousands of shots from it and the mounts were unmarked. It had a 4X All American on it for the most part.

That rifle is no 458 Win however.

I did have the screws tightening the rings very tight however. So they were a release mount with that would need a coin or tool to loosen the Weaver screws. The QRW may not tighten the clamp as much.

That scope's objective is too big and will look ridiculous on a slim rifle like a M70 Featherweight.

This scope would look a lot better and is plenty powerful.

I'm going to agree with Allen on avoiding the Leupold PRW/QRW rings. I used to have a set of PRWs and found the following problems:

1) The base was machined incorrectly and would not mate to a proper MIL-STD-1913 rail. The width between jaws was a hair undersized.

2) The ring halves are not split symetrically. That cause two problems: first it is a huge pain the ass to slip top half over the scope's tube. You will scratch it. Second, the rings tend to squeeze the scope tube inwards when tightened, leaving a dent on the side of the scope. You can see that happening with the mating angle of the top and bottom halves. I know EAW rings look like that too, but there is something wrong with the Leupold design.

I bought those rings to hold a 10X40 scope on a Model 70 target rifle. They were a huge disappointment. I replaced them with Warne Maxima QDs and all the problems went away. I also have Maxima QDs holding the scope of my CZ 550, and they fit the CZ dovetail perfectly.

While Warne may make the PRW/QRW for Leupold, I cannot blame Warne for the problem because Warne's own rings work perfectly. That makes me suspect there is an issue with Leupold's design. If Warne follows the Leupold blueprint, and the rings don't work, it ain't Warne's fault.

If I were you, I'd spring for a set of Talleys and never look back.

I think I'll get iron sights first.

All my rifles must have them! Well, maybe not on varminting rifles...
