Im taking a scoped Ruger No.1 in 300WinMag for use when my DR in 9.3x74R isnt appropriate with iron sights. Ive read that a 180gr bullet is a good choice; but Im not sure what factory load is "best". This is for a PG hunt with game ranging between Sprinbok and Eland.

I dont handload, so I need a factory load that is readily available in the US. Id prefer to take only one type, so I dont have to worry about the wrong bullet when a shot presents.

Any suggestions?

Federal makes a pretty fair load with a 200 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. Zeroed at 250 yards you'll be 3.5" high at 100 yards and 4.7" low at 300 yards.

Thanks. What must have been just seconds before you posted I edited my post. I had been checking my notes and realized I had listed 220gr bullets instead of 180gr. I remember now being confused when I read that 180gr was a better choice, as I assumed the heavier 220gr would be better.

So your suggestion of 200gr may be the best compromise between what I thought and what better minds than mine advised....

I'd still go with 180's for PG where a little flatter trajectory can be nice. tons to choose from, I like the Barnes, the Federal with Partions, The Rem with core-lokt, and the Winchester with the XP or the Accubond

I will second the Federal 200 grain TBBC for the best factory 300 WM load. I have used it in Africa and US with excellent results.
