Id like to get a 338 mag , 338-06 or something thereabouts. Im thinking of getting a CZ 550 9.3x62.
But I have this old worn customized 30-06 Enfield/ rem model 30 that I thought was a rem m 720. It might make a nice project gun to make into a 338-06 or???

Any tips on a reliable good smith to contact about work on that model 30/720?

30/720.. It has a model 720 bolt handle and the 720 guide rib on the bolt and reciever but I think its a newer model 30. It has some holes tapped and plugged at 2:00 and 10:00 on the reciever so it might need some tig work.

It's probably a late model 30 Deluxe or Express. Either of these would make a great 338-06. The plugged holes could be for an old adjustable scope mount. I'm sorry I can't recommend anyone offhand (OK, Tom Burgess, but he's backed up about 10 years, because he does such nice work). Perhaps some of the other posters will weigh in now that this has been pushed back to the top (BTT). If you want to sell it, let me know. - Dan

If I had a Rem M-30 I would not waste it on a short round like the 338-06, it is sought after for 500 Jefferys and 505 Gibbs calibers...Its a huge action with a lot of room to make the best of elephant guns...I would sure like to have it for a big bore project. I would in fact buy you a nice 06 length action for it.

Hmmm.. Ray ... This rifle I found in a gun shop about 15 years ago.
It is differnt than the discriptions and pictures of model 30s i have seen in Frank de Hass book.
It looks more like a model 720 because of the bolt handle and guide rib on the bolt and slot in the rear bridge. But the bolt stop/reliese spring is I think modified and the rear of the reciever where the spring mounted is ground off contoured and the spring modified (I read about thie modification)
The reciever has no markings(remington model 30)but looks like it could have been polished off because its reblued. Also see plugs at 10:00,2:00 on the reciever from a scope mount. It has no holes taped in the top, but has a side mount scope mount. The bolt etc had been jeweled.
JBelk was asking around what it was for me last year. Someone said that there were some late model 30s with the guide rib on the bolt.
The research I did on the remington barrel letter codes BK, LK, XF say 1941 and 1937
See if this pic works -
