Looking to purchase for my Son a savage 308 stainless steel with accu-trigger and was wondering if any of you could give me any info on the accuracy of this rifle. I have a couple savage varmint rifles that are great but have not owned a big game rifle in the savage line.

In the factory rifle benchrest events events Remington rules the roost. The 700 was and is the rifle to beat so to speak. Yeah there are the odd Sako and Winnie, but it was one of these to the rest of the line of 700's. Until Savage brought out there accu-trigger. Seems Moses has moved the mountain so to speak. In the last couple of years the Savages are coming on strong, have swept a couple of matches and are a substanial percentage of winners in virtually every event nowdays. The factory event is pretty much a stock rifle with no modifications allowed. Savages although they are ugly as all get out are earning their strips the hard way, by performing. THe bonus is the swap barrel feature, a extra barrel, a headpace guage and barrel wrench and 20 minutes max and you have a new caliber to shoot. My gunsmith loves them, and Sierra is using them for their test platform on their reloading manual data. In short these are very accurate rifles, and at the price point probably the best buy in an accurate rifle around.

My main hunting rifle is the Savage Weather Warrior in .300WSM. YES, it is amazingly accurate! I regularly get .4-.6" groups at 100 yards with premium FACTORY ammo. I also get .6-1" groups with Factory Power Points- the cheapest ammo available. No doubt, this is one great shooter. My rifle is pre-Accutrigger, but has been adjusted by a gunsmith. The only thing I would adjust on your new factory rifle is LOP and install a Pachmyer Sporting Clays or similar high quality recoil pad. Top end rings, bases and scope are needed to do justice to this rifle. I use a Zeiss scope and Leupold mounts. BTW, it is very durable. I used mine in the extreme north of Labrador and Quebec during the winter at -30 to -55 below zero and have also used it in Africa with temps. into the +90s. I also took a couple of serious spills with it- once while running on ice across a lake that sent it head over heals and slidding into the slush and another time while running along a ridge that made it dive with me into the rocks. Aside from a couple of minor dents in the stock and side of barrel- it still shoots the same!

FYI- I never run with a round chambered. Why run? Hunting caribou sometimes requires quick action to head them off at the pass- they are mainly on the move during migrations.

Amazing rifles. Just added a 11FL (left handed) 300 win mag with the acra trigger to my stable. Like every savage I have owne it doesnt matter what load I used its a MOA shooter. But like leftly said, add a quality pad. Only complaint I have with mine is it is hard to load the belted rounds into the magazine. My biggest fear is when I die my wife will sell my guns for what I told her they cost.

You know if we had to place our hard earned bucks down on which factory rifles would be the most accurate. Every time I would bet on the Savage! Slam dunk this one is gonna IMO kick butt day in and day out. Is there other company's that make em accurate, you bet Tikka would be my next choice then Rem. But I would no doubt each and every time put my $ on the Savage. MD (funny thing is I don't own a sav as we speak, maybe I need to remedy that, I would like to find one of their old Scouts in a 308)

I have just bought my first Savage, a 12 BVSS in 223.... Although extremely pleased with it... I can't say that it is any more accurate than my Ruger VT, or my Rem VLS or Rem VSS in 223.... The negative side on the 223 in the Savage is getting use to that 1 in 9 twist... I have found I can't use some fragile bullets for Varminting.... That is the cost of a barrel that will shoot 69 grain and up match bullets.... the 12 BVSS series is built like a 53 Buick.. big and tough... and it is plenty accurate.... I am really putting it thru its paces for load testing and accuracy... when I am done it will involve a total of about 1500 rounds down the barrel... But so are the Rugers and Remingtons... As I said earlier tho, on another thread.. it is hard to find a load a 223 won't shoot well... I suspect a 308 is close to the same thing.... cheers seafire

I get 3/4" groups with most any load from my 116 300 Win mag. I have done nothing to the rifle except havethe trigger worked. You shouldn't need to do anything to get good groups if you get the accutrigger.

I have that exact gun, minus the accutrigger. Got it just as the accutrigger were coming out, and thus got a very good deal. I installed a Pach. Deaccelerator pad and a timmey trigger. This gun shoots the 150 gr Nosler BT and the 150 Sierra SPT in the same spot, slightly under an inch for 5 shots at 100 yds. Might do better if it weren't for the shooter. It shoots every bit as good as my 7-08 Tikka. Its just too good of a gun to get rid of.
