local store having spring sale. are these fair prices? 1) rem 700 mtn rifle dm blue in .270 win $569 2) rem 700 mtn rifle lss in .260 rem $569 3) rem model 7 youth in 7mm-08 $407 the two long remmies are awfully nice. that mtn rifle stock is sweet. the yute model, despite 7/8th-inch shorter LOP, sure felt nice, too, and felt lighter than the two longer ones despite manufacturer's claim they weigh the same. lotta difference between yute stock (stained birch or beech) and the mtn rifle stocks, but $160 worth? are these good prices? i'm thinking i could get the yute model for even less because there is a tiny chip in the finish in the tip of the forend, and a couple of other discreet handling mars elsewhere on the stock. i could stick a pachmayr decelerator on the butt and regain a half inch of lop. what you'uns think? many thanks.

True the two Mtn rifles are a lot prettier than the model 7 but I would be highly tempted to buy the model 7. I have a model 7 as well as a Classic and a custom rifle in 7-08 but the model 7 is the first rifle I grab for hiking up and down these mountains. My son used a 7-08 to kill a large mulie at 287 long steps in Wy. So the calibre is not suspect at all. Also, you can use the $150.00 toward a nice compact 2x7 or 1.5x6 to balance the rig. good shooting.

I'm a sucker for pretty rifles, so I'd go with the 700 Mountain DM.

Actually you might need a decelerator pad on that very light model 7 youth in 7mm-08. It's "youth" in size and weight only but not in recoil.

I'm fortunate enough to have one of each, and, for my money, the LSS is defintely the way to go. That short LOP on the youth model just didn't work, so, I got an R-P synthetic stock from a regular M7 stainless synthetic and stuck it on there. Excellent, but, still doesn't beat the LSS stock. I'd take the mountain over the yute. I think the 22" barrel will be more virsatile because of the down range performance. The 260 sounds sweet. I just suggested that rifle last night to my friend.

BUY THAT MODEL 7. I"VE HAD A MODEL 7 IN 308 WIN FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. IF THE TERRAIN WHERE YOU HUNT IS ROUGH THE SHORT BARREL WILL PERMIT YOU TO GET BACK IN THE ROUGH WHILE THE OTHERS JUST STAND AND WATCH! ALSO KICK IS REALLY NOT BAD. I'VE SHOT TRUELY HOT LOADED 180GRN LOADS WITH OUT A HITCH IN MY 308.

I bought a remington model 700 mtn. rifle with DM; blue barrel, and wood stock when i was 15 years old. It is chambered in .280 remington and it carries a 3-9 vary x 2 leupold that i bought at the same time i did the gun. This gun shoots under inch and 1/2 inch 3-shot groups are common at 100 yards with 52 grains of rl-19, rem 9 1/2 primers, r-p cases, and sierra 160 grain gamekings. Not a hot load but very accurate for such a lightweight rifle. I think the velocity cronyed at 2680 fps. This was in 40 degree or so weather. I have killed a spike elk and three point buck with this rifle and its a joy to carry and handles well. i would highly recommend the mountain rifle. oh i think the price you posted is actually a little high as i paid $514 for mine, but that was four years ago so the prices could have went up, i havent checked. Anyway i havent had any experience with the model 7 except in stainless synthetic .223 and that gun shoots very well, it belongs to a friend of mine. Either way i assume you would be happy, but i can personally recommend the REMINGTON 700 MTN RIFLE WITH DETACHABLE MAGAZINE IN BLUE AND WOOD STOCK. GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!

I have three mountain rifles. One in '06, one in 270 and one in 260. The last two are stainless. I went with the mountain rifles because of their longer barrels hoping to get more velocity. I'm still working on loads for the 270, but the '06 and 260 are both sub MOA guns! Bob257

I paid $599 for mine. It's the wood model with BM in '06. The laminated model was about $100 more when I priced them. I've been very happy with mine. 59 grains of 4350 under a 165 grain Sierra has shot under .75" ever since I got it. Best group with neck-sized brass, weighed charges, and everything else I could do was .23". Go for it. NoCAL
