This is a fine shooting Remington M-721 in .300 H&H. I'm considering shortening the barrel to 24" and removing the swell on the barrel for the rear sight and installing Williams ramped front sight and rear as well and rebluing. If it was an old M-70 I'd never think of it! But this Remington????? Is this something I should rethink? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I do not see what you would gain by shortning the barrel. I think I would leave it alone. If I were going to change the sights I would go with a NEGC banded style front. But I think I would leav it alone. its a nice rifle as is...tj3006 freedom1st

I think I would leave it alone, just a reblue and sights of your choice. I have never owned a 721, but have two buddies that do, both rifles had extractor problems.

I'd leave it! It may be an easier gun to carry with the shorter barrel, but I would be looking at it as velocity loss, etc. Especially with the big .30 cal "Let me start off with two words: Made in America"

I too, would NOT to want to do anything to that rifle! Kinda like not fixing something that's not broke. So... What is problem that needs fixing?
Good luck on whatever you decide to do. ________ Ray

Should I alter this 300 H&H? Hell No......... _____________________________________________________ A 9mm may expand to a larger diameter, but a 45 ain't going to shrink Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened. - Winston Churchill

I listed it in the classifieds about a year ago and there was no tire kickers at all.....maybe it was the $800 price tag I attached to it.... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I agree with those who say that you should absolutely leave it as is. "How's that whole 'hopey-changey' thing working out for ya?"

If it were mine I'd restock it and use the new Williams Oberndorf style bottom metal in a classic English style stock. I'd leave the barrel band on the barrel and leave the barrel the same length but add a front site hood (I may have one that fits)......................DJ ....Remember that this is all supposed to be for fun!..................

It is, of course, yours to do with as you wish, but I personally really like the longer barrels of those rifles and the dognut. Telly

I'd leave the old girl alone, she looks to be in pretty good shape. Walk softly and carry a big bore!

Yes. Blue book at 98% is $600. But if you have some flexibility in price........ On the other hand, that's not a rifle I would ever sell! LWD

What earthly difference is there between 26" and 24' barrel, my pocket knife is longer than than a measly 2 inches. There may be things out there wherein 2 inches makes a difference under certain circumstances, but your barrel isn't one of them Magnums need long tubes, long tubes are an asset to good off hand shooting. Heck, All I would do is install a decent folding rear sight to fill that dovetail, refinish the stock, and use the heck out of it.
