I with RickMD in that I much prefer older rifles. However, if I had to choose an off the shelf rifle today I would probably choose a Sako. It would have to be blued/walnut. I just couldn't bring myself to buy stainless/synthetic, despite all their obvious advantages.

1GEEJAY,

Howa use to make Weatherby Mark Vs until about 1995. They are now made in the USA.

Howa have their own action/rifle which has been marketed around the world under different names and styles such as Smith and Wesson and Weatherby Vanguard and CMC in Australia. The rifle is now saold inn Australia as Howa and I think that might be the case in America as well.

Ive had two CZ rifles, a mauser 98 and a Norwegian Kongsberg (Lakelander) 393. They all performed very well, the 393 being very accurate with a smooth modern action, but an awfull stock.

The mauser and CZ have classic looks and a reliable action, but I have never needed the big extractor and controlled round feed. I much prefer an action that is faster/easier to cycle.

Now I use two Blaser rifles, a K95 single shot and a R93 repeater, the latter replacing my .375 CZ550. I think the Blaser rifles are the best right now, by far. Advanced but functional tech. wise, good stocks, very nice finish and very flexible (switch barrel system, one rifle=as many different barrels/chanberings as you like)

They are expensive though.

My friends use Sako, Sauer, Remington and Mauser, I am not impressed at all by the features/quality of these guns. This is my humble opinion anyway. If I was on a budget Id buy a remington seven ss and put a decent safety on it when funds allowed.

The Cooper rifle will win hands down. It is one of the finest factory rifles you can own.

The stocks are mediocre at best, but well fit and while the actions are smooth running and feed flawlessly it doesn't take a tool maker to find machine marks and finishes on the rougher side.I won't even get into the 98 or springfield except to say the finish on the winchesters are better by far. Maybe what you have seen are custom guns, highly worked or in some cases a super grade finish. I own several of the newer classic actions as well and the ones I have are finished better BUT all needed some work to ensure feeding and action fitting. Someone did say recently that virtually all guns purchased today are "in the rough" and need some adjusting. Seems true. I've owned most of the major and minor brands over the years but have settled on the winchesters. In some ways I find it stange that my favorites were made when I was just 12 yrs old, the first year I hunted.

Pathfinder, Mauser's vary widely in their fit in finish, they were made in many countries, and under wartime conditions. A good Mauser is finished better than any Factory Sporter.

Allen,

That reply surprised me. I really like Weatherbys but I would have expected a Win/Rem/Sako choice before Weatherby coming from you. With your experience and preferences, I'm curious as to the reasoning behind your pick.
