Havent shot a rifle in in a long time, and am going first thing in the Morning.
I am taking my new rifle, a Kimber 8400 Montana in .300 Win Mag.
All shots hunting will be under 300 yards,
The range I am shooting at allows shooting at either 50 yards or 100 yards.
I would perfer to start sight in at 50 yards.
Where should where should I be on paper at 50 yards?
Thanks in advance,
W.

I think 1/2" high at 50 yards will be 2" high at 100 yds and dead on at 200yds depending on you scope set up.

Best check to be sure though.

Too many unknown variables here. More info would help but you will still have to shoot it and see.

about 11/2' high at 100 will be good to 300 yds
it is six clicks in my 25-06.
for 100to300 change with crosshairs it is also three clicks of windage.

I am content to merely get on paper somewhere near the aiming point at 50 yards. I then put my bullet dead center and + 3" @ 100 yards. This will allow you to aim dead on the spot you want to hit all the way out to about 325 yards with a 180-grain in the .300 Win. Mag. Your bullet will strike pretty close to withing 3" of the aiming spot all the way out to 325 yards, perhaps a bit more..... Always try to confirm your zero by shooting as far out as your range will allow, as windage is often a little off at extended ranges if you set it at 50 yards....

Go ahead and get on the paper at 50 yards if you want to..but be sure and try your gun at 100 yards...Most folks like to be 2 or 3 inches high at 100 yards, but if you have not shot in a long time then you would probably be better off an inch high at 100...

I have been shooting for years so I tend to sight in 2.5" high at 100 yards, but I know the trajectory of my rifle and instinctively aim low on the closer shots.

In my experience most game is overshot, not undershot.

Shoot one shot at a blank piece of paper at 50 yards. Then shoot at your bullet hole. Adjust until you are hitting your bullet hole.
Move to 100 yards and adjust to 2.5" high. You can now aim dead in at any range out to about 350 yards.
I assume you'll be shooting a 200gr bullet.
