got this at a bargain price, curious to know what it will take to make a reliable 500yd. gun.
It looks pretty shoddy in its stock form. Will probably change the barrel and the trigger is terrible.
Would appreciate any knowlegeble input, where should I srart and what is it going to end up costing?

You should shoot it for groups with some 180 grain factory ammo to see what it will do. Then you'll know pretty much what direction to take. If it shoots 1-1 1/2" with factory ammo, you've got a good barrel and will probably get 1/2" with hand loads. You may not need a barrel at all. From what I understand, the new Rem triggers can be retrofitted or you can get a Timney or Rifle Basix trigger.

Hey there Big Don. If you want a 500 yd. rifle, the 300RUM should be up to the task. I couldn't help but notice that you reside in Scio, as I have quite a bit of family that resides in that area too. It certainly is beautiful country and I can see how 500 yard shots are possible around some of those grass field areas. Please give us some more detail on this new purchase. I currently own a 338RUM Model 700 Sendero and I might be compelled to bring it along on my next trip out there. I found it a shear joy to wake up in the morning and glass elk from my aunt and uncles living room; quite a sight for a Blue Ridge mountain boy Hope this project goes well and keep us informed.

If it's a Rem bolt gun, there is tons of aftermarket stuff available to help it reach max potential. Triggers are easy, and stocks too. I agree with the post that said shoot it to see if the barrel is OK or not, it probably is. Modern rifle barrels are often quite good, and the 300 RUM can't be that old.

Good mounts and optics are key for a 500 yard rig, and IME usually bedding is as well. I would list in order of priority to get it shooting well

1. Trigger
2. Barrel
3. Optics
4. Stock/fit/bedding
5. All the rest

Of course proper loads bring it all together!

I own a Remington 700 in .300 RUM. The first thing I did was install a Jewell trigger and man what a difference. The factory trigger was just awful. Shoots reasonable groups with factory barrel.

I own a 300 RUM. Shot my bear with it up in Canada.

My buddy has a bone stock BDL in .300 RUM. Well we did adjust the trigger I guess. Not even a challenge to hit a 2 gallon pail all the way across the gravel pit he works at (400-450yds). Thing is incredible. May I recommend the limbsaver recoil pad though. It tamed the beast nicely over the plastic one on the rifle. I am not recoil shy but helps during load development. I am jealous of his LOL.

Let me tell you, I have a stock Rem 300 RUM, did a trigger job and custom muzzle break, thats it. It shoots sub MOA with factory Remington 180 grain Nosler partition bullets. It is DEADLY and has accounted for over 14 head of african game from Steenbuck to Giraffe. It has also accounted for a Bull Elk at over 250 yards, and some 300 yard coyotes.

It seems to me that most of the 300 RUMs, even in factory barrels are normally accurate.

Give it a try first with factory ammo, you may be pleasantly suprised I love RUM's next is 338 RUM.
