I'm playing with the idea of getting a long range rifle but I'm on a budget I was hoping I could get your ideas and what you like thanks God loves you

Long range for what, and how long? On a budget? Get a cheap Savage in .300 Win Mag and invest in some good optics. Perhaps you can find a used .340 Wby Mag. Without knowing the purpose and the "long range" it is like playing TGWOR. Don't ask me what happened, when I left Viet Nam, we were winning.

You need to better define what "Long Range" is, and what level precision and energy or power you need to deliever at that distance. Paper/steel targets or game animal application? Secondly you need to also define your budget, and does that budget include your potential sight system? There are many fine choices, let us help you by helping us... I'm toying with a similar idea as I'm wanting to shoot in the Sporting Rifle Match in NM by April or May. I decided on a .243 for my first long range rifle. I'm looking at either a 7 or 8 twist barrel and I'll be building it on a Savage to keep my cost down by doing the work myself. I chose the .243 because that is a cartridge I already reload for. Plus with 105-115 bullets I can hang withe the 6.5 and 7mm bullets at long range. Plus after a day of shooting several round my shoulder will still be in good shape. The biggest problem with long range shooting is finding a range you can practice at. I'm a little lucky as I've got access to private property that I can shoot out to well beyond 1000 yards safely. The match I want to compete in is 60 targets spaced from 175-875 yards. This will be my first attempt at learning to shoot long range for a match.

Im building a budget 260 Rem on a Mauser M-48 action. It is mostly done, but Im waiting on a Boyds stock that should arrive in a couple days. It will get a laminated fetherweight thumbhole ($70.00). It is being built with long range accuracy in mind, but may double as a varmint/deer rifle. I have a BSA contender 8-32X scope Im gonna try on it but It is definatly NOT a good scope for hunting. If I dont like it for long range I may dump it for something better. I dont think Ive got much more than roughly $500.00 into it, Ive built two of them and sold them for friends that wanted a rifle and they are quite pleased with the 260. I used Adams & Bennet bbls with the yugo actions and so far they have all shot really well. My main idea is just to have fun shooting on any given day and to test/improve my skills. The Savage suggestion is a good one. I can also reccomend Howa/Wby Vanguard for accuracy on a budget. Any scoped 6.5X55 is a good long range caliber as well.

For caliber I was thinking 308 but not settled on one yet. For budget under1000 bucks and for long range I want what every gun loving shooting maniac wants 2000 yard range but i`d be happy with 500 yds for now God loves you

I'm looking at scopes that cost at least that much! So I will not be much help and would blow your budget just on optics alone.

Savage FCP/10K .308, Nothing out there can touch it! Let me repeat NOTHING even if you were to spend another thousand bucks. This rifle outscored the military M24 67/79 in the 600 yard relay at YPB in 2010 and CP open Nationals 2009! About $850.00 w/o scope.

Good choice, but for solid long range performance, you can't beat the .308

With the overwhelming use of the 308 in military and police/Special Ops/Sniper applications, you can't beat the 308 as a 500 yard caliber. Plus, the abundance of match grade ammunition available may get you into competitive accuracy without even needing to handload.

That savage fcp/10k looks great if it had a big pistol grip stock it would be perfect but I'm sure I can get one for it later. There is a lot of great match grade 308 ammo out there but I love reloading to much. Thanks to everyone so far God loves you

The .308 trajectory is somewhat rainbow shaped at 1,000yds though. Hitting the Whittington Centre white buffalo with iron sights & an L1A1 took some doing.

Zero to 800 yards, the .308 has no match in its class! Little bit of wind, no problem, humidity no problem. You can always go to the 6.5X284 etc., but you better not have any wind and of course the .338 LM takes the reins, but who wants to shoot that all day? A must read for anyone. http://www.huntingillustrated....1/15/the-mighty-308/
