Looking at winchester chart, they launch factory .308 168gnBT 2660fps,at 300yds still retains about 1700 in energy. Is that not long range performance, equal to a 270win for medium game? Even better may be the 7mm08 with 162gn sst.

The 125 gr weight in the .308 does about 3100 fps and from looking at charts shoots flatter to 400 yards than the 150 gr stuff.....in a nosler bt at any rate, I reckon if there was a 125 gr barnes x or something like that with a high bc it would have a good bc for any normal hunting ranges your likely to encounter.

I find the .308 very boring. I also find it very efficient and perfect for short, handy carbines (such as my pretty, little Ruger RSI). No flies on the .308 in a 22" or 24" barrel for medium game at any practical range, but if I'm going 22" or more, I'll take a long action and the increased powder space. -Lou

308 is basically a 30-06 for all practical hunting purposes, now if thats not high praise then I don't know what is...I have shot a lot of plainsgame in Africa, one cape bufflao and lots of deer and antelope with the .308 and no complaints as yet...and yes it was a bit light for buffalo thats why I only shot one with it.
