I recently acquired the rifle in the subject line in 30-06. This is my father's rifle and was purchased in Germany (possibly used) between 1970-1973. I can find no model number on the rifle. Barrel appears to be ~20". It is missing the stock end cap and I would like to replace it. He states that it was screwed onto the end of the stock and did not encircle the barrel. Any ideas of where I might find this part?

Recknagel's part is not at all like the Husqvarna part.

Perhaps it could be adapted but I think a bit more of the barrel will protrude than is generally considered aesthetically pleasing.

Not really, but close. You might check with the new Zastava importer to see if the end cap is available. You could also just add an ebony tip.

Long and short of it is, you will probably have an easier time modifying or fitting another cap to the rifle than you will trying to locate an original.

Thanks for all the help. I sent an inquiry to tommys vapernverkstad (thank you Nordic2). I hope someone understands English there as I have no Swedish.

I appreciate the info z1r. Any chance for some closeups on the end cap of the pictured rifle so I know what I'm after or trying to reproduce?

If I can't find a replacement cap, fabricating a wood one seems doable. I would like some idea of the appropriate contours though.

That's what I would suggest as a backup plan - use Ebony or hard, black rubber to make a replica. I needed a new grip cap on a Mannlicher-Schoenauer built in 1908 and couldn't find one, so I made a replacement out of ebony.

I can PM you a pic tomorrow.

There are lots of end caps out there, problem is, most have a competely different contour that would require you to reshape the stock. Look to the Mauser type S models for ideas of wood fitment for an endcap.

JT,

It appears you have a nice model 458 there. I would be willing to ship an end cap from one of mine to you to see if you could have one made.

Using the model number I did find a photo of what I'm after

If I make one from ebony I will likely need to trim off the tenon and use a smaller peice of dowel.

I wouldn't modify the stock, try to keep it original.

If you e-mail or phone MPI stocks, perhaps Doc will tell you the name and phone number of the gunsmith (in Idaho or Montana IIRC) who completes the manufacture of and fits Mannlicher forend caps of the rifles they stock for people.

Should you not find a suitable metal endcap, consider the possibility of an Ebony substitute.

Ya-know... I could be completely FOS.... But that profile, I'm thinking that looks suspiciously close to a Swede Mod96 Carbine nose cap sans the Bayonet lug & long tang down the stock.. Perhaps machine the lug off, polish re blue your back in the game??

Is the gun a push feed (HVA 1900 series) or a controlled round feed (HVA 1600 series)? I can not tell from the picture.
I have some parts for the 1600 series, if you can measure the length & diameter of the wood that the cap sits on I will go though my parts box.
If your gun is a 1900 series, try Zoli. The still make the gun in Italy & is marketed in Europe.
Never seen a factory HVA gun with double set triggers, are they aftermarket?

Its a Mauser (control feed)....That cap would be easy to duplicate by about any good gunsmith..It is too square to find one commercially but you could probably fit a rounded one..Brownells has them.

Yes it is a controlled feed. The diameter of the wood that the cap sits on is .728", its length is .651".

Ray, are you thinking of the Lenard Brownell Mannlicher nose cap?

The DST is aftermarket per my father. The front trigger is rather close to the trigger guard and may need replacement.

No joy in the parts box.
If you are not in a rush check back with me in a couple of months. I have a small pile of HVA 1600 series guns coming in the summer, including some with a full stock. Some will be sold as they sit and some will be torn down for parts based on condition. I have not seen them so can not at this time make a promise what I will have available.
It looks like you have a late gun with a alloy TG, correct?

www.brownells.com will get you there.

Page 425, Mannlicher Nose cap, order # 095-004-001AK. $18.49

It will fit any mannlicher stock, might take a tad of fitting and on your rifle you may have to cut and crown the barrel to flush, as you don't want any barrel protruding past the cap as thats plumb ugly...but you may not have to do that, I never have had to.
