9.3x62mm Rl-17 Quick Load Help

I have a CZ-550 American in 9.3x62mm that has a 23.6" barrel. 9.3x62mm has a max pressure 56,565 psi.

Realguns shows a 61.5gr load of RL-17 to give 2501fps.
http://www.realguns.com/loads/93x62mm.htm

I've read of higher velocity loadings in the 9.3x62mm with RL-17 here, and on other websites.

Below is an example:
"My North American “heavy load” is the 286gr Nosler Partition leaving the muzzle of the TIKKA at 2633 fps (avg). The barrel is 22.4-inches." This seems quite excessive to me.
http://www.bigbores.ca/

The CZ-550 also comes in 270 Win (65,000 psi max). So I imagine that some people are loading to greater pressures than (56,565 psi) in their rifles.

Could someone with quick load please provide grains, velocity, and pressure information for RL-17?

I ran it in quickload
See if I got it right, 285 grain Partition, 61.5 grains RL17, overall cartridge length 3.3", 23.5" barrel length= estimated fps of 2484 and pressure 55,879psi.

I've never put much stock in what other people get for velocity, I just go by what my rifle produces with accurate loads over my chrony. I have some rifles with real "fast" barrels and some rifles that never get to posted velocities.

My 20" barreled 9.3x62 pushes a 286 grain PRVI at 2460 fps with 63 grains of Ramshot Big Game. And yes I'm sure you can exceed the 56,565 psi for the original 9.3x62 loads with new modern brass.

Thanks Snellstorm! So the realguns load is right at the max 9.3x62mm pressure. Would you mind walking the load up one grain at a time so I could see what load and pressure would give 2633fps load that I quoted. I'm curious if that is up near the 65K psi

The speed shown for the Tikka rifle seems unrealistic unless that rifle has a very fast barrel.
Quickload shows that if you are using RL17 and pushing a 286 grain Nos Partition out of a 22.4" barrel that you are running about 70,800+ psi, yikes!
I think it took 66 or 67 grains to get there.
Way overloaded in my opinion, I prefer something where you get to keep using the brass several times.

I figured that was a major overload.

Could you tell me how many grains of powder, and the velocity, for 60,000 psi and 65,000 psi loads ?

I think people are squeezing more out of this caliber. I'd like to know the data to ensure it is being done safely.

Remember these are just Quickload estimates, approach all loads with caution and don't blow your shit up.
60,436 psi = 2515 fps and 63 grains
65,398 psi = 2572 fps and 64.5 grains

To me the velocity realized is not worth the pressure gained. The 9.3 does not gain much by pushing it hard.

Thank you so much for the information. I agree, pressures are rising fast and velocity isn't rising much once you get past 61.5gr, which is what Realguns published.

My QuickLoad experience with RL-17 is that it runs about 100fps slower Mv than predicted. That being said, it is still a top performer & yields great Std deviation & accuracy.

This has been true with 8X57 & 30/40 Krag.

It seems to perform on a par with Vv N550 & is a lot more readily available.

I use it for all my medium case capacity cartridges.

I found that Ramshot Big Game is hands down the daddy in my 9.3x62. Extremely small variations, easy to meter and plenty of speed. Like I said above I get 2460fps out of my 20" barreled 9.3 with 63 grains and a 286 grain bullet, I think that's pretty fair. Sub MOA shooter. If I push beyond that accuracy tapers off and the recoil does become a handful the rifle is extremely light.

Here is what my notes show for RS Big Game, Lapua Case, CCI Primer 286 GR Nosler Part. In my 22" 9.3 X 62 Win 70. About 100 FPS faster
than RL 15 and more accurate. I have not tested it for pressure but it works well in my rifle with no signs of excess pressure in my rifle. But please work your way up in your rifle.

66 Gr RS BG 2517 FPS , 2539 FPS,2521FPS 286 NP 3 shots @ .69" at 100 yards

I must have a slow barrel.
I started w/ 62g RL 17 and worked up to 65g.
I'm not getting but 2450(ish) fps. Accurate, but slower than anticipated or hoped.
Next I'll try 250s and Varget.

Your realgun quotes are pretty close but as customary, start low and work up and use a chronograph. My preferred powders in the 9.3x62 are RL-15, RL-17 and H414 or the similar WW760. I look for 2600 FPS plus in both the 250 and 270 gr bullets, 2525 FPS in 286 gr. bullets, and 2350 plus FPS with the 320 Woodleigh with most of the 9.3x62 98 Mausers that I have built or used..I love the caliber and have been shooting it for about 35 to 40 years. My present rifle is an Obendorf Mauser with a full rib, oct to round 23 inch barrel. All my past 9.3x62s have been on Mauser actions with the exception of a couple of Ruger Hawkeye Africans. I really like the Ruger Africans.
