I had an opportunity to pick up three boxes of the Norma 250gr. Oryx for $45/box recently. On sale. That never happens, and it was cheaper than buying brass.
Anyhow, does anyone have any experience using the Norma offerings? I am getting some over pressure signs consistently, and was wondering if Norma typically loads a bit "hot". Haven't chronographed them yet.
Many thanks

I can't speak to the new stuff. I do have some 15+yr old 358Norma Mag and it has a fairly flat primer. But never had any other issues.

As usual just my $.02

Is there anyone in the Yukon that doesn't have a 358 Norma?

Standard issue for moving up there I guess.

i provided some factory ammo norma for two local hunters many years ago and they never reported issues.

i never had hot load for the 9.3x62 when i needed factory ammo.

that is a good deal for sure.

Norma usually loads right up there and why not. Not much point in having a magnum with a pussy load. I found Norma's velocities were usually very good. They loaded some good loads for the 7x57 compared with the USA loaded anemic stuff. They were the only manufacturer of 7x61 S&H cartridges and they had very flattened primers but sent a 160gr bullet on its way very close to the advertised 3100fps with no problems associated with pressure.

What do you mean by "getting over pressure signs consistently"? If it is just flattened primers and the bolt opens easy with normal case extraction, whats the problem?

I have not used the Oryx bullet but the older soft points where quite soft at velocities the 358 Norma is capable of. Used them on moose and found they come apart Lots of meat damage. After that I bought a bunch of new brass and handload all my ammo. The TSX or partition hold together much better at velocity the 358 Norma is capable of.

Where did you get the ammo from? I have a 358 Norma and would buy a few boxes myself at that price.

Its a Mauser action and the extractor sticks on every round, noticeable scrape on the primer cup. Put a 1/2 dozen hand loads through it and no signs at all. The Norma loads shoot very well, just the OP signs. I know the Moose don't like the Norma loads.
Medved, they were from SportsLodge a couple of years ago, after your time. Sweet deal.

Norma 6.5 Swede loads are hot and I love them, same with the 300 Win Mag.

Norma uses 72%copper and 28%zink in their cases wich make them a little softer or better to tell pressure signs than some other makers.

The old .358 bullet was made for .358w speeds wich made a bad reputation for .358nm. The Oryx bullet are bonded with similar performance as Hornady interbond. Superb for moose.

A Mauser controlled round fed extractor doesn't go anywhere near the primer on a case, are you talking of indentations or patterns on the bolt face showing on the primer? What velocity are you getting from your reloads? You will be using different, possibly harder, primers so they may not show the same signs in your reloads as Norma primers especially if pressure and velocity are lower?

This is a fired Norma factory ammo case, plenty of primer flattening but no issues with pressure in the S&L rifle and these cases could be reloaded quite a few times.

Are your primers anything like these?

My 9.3x62 really likes the 286 Grain Norma Oryx factory ammo. Accuracy is very close to MOA when tested at 200 yards. I too got a good deal and bought mine for the brass as well. I've not taken any game with the bullet but, it is a bonded bullet and I would not hesitate to use it on deer, elk or hogs, which is pretty much what I hunt with this rifle.

Start young, hunt hard, and enjoy God's bounty.
