Quote: .280 Remington, another grossly unappreciated round and one of my personal favorites. It too is underloaded for use in the M742 autoloader, although not as bad as the 8x57. According to "Quickload" when loaded to similar pressure, from the same length barrel, it is only about 50fps behind the 7mm Rem Mag. I just got a M700CDL in .280 and I am getting 3133fps Av MV(corrected from 3123@ 15')over my Pact chrono. (24" barrel, 62gr Vv N560 and 140gr Nosler Accubond)That boys and girls is not too far from 7mm Mag performance from a 24" tube. Yes I am near max pressure for the 7MM Mag, but apples to apples eh? The Norma brass seems to be taking it in stride, no loose primer pockets yet, time will tell. Accuracy is slighly under MOA. I wish I could get some more Norma MRP. I was getting just over 3,200fps with an estimated pressure of slightly over 60k. P.S. Deer season opened this morning! I can't wait to send one of those 140gr Accubonds on it's way. I'll be headed out in about 30 min.

Quote: Actually Brad the 2 were developed @ the same time and were to be released to the pilgrims simultaniously. Some genius @ Winchester/Olin failed to have taken into account the painfull lesson that Remington learned from the 7mm-06. (the original name for the 280/7mm Express/280) The 7mm WSM had to be re-designed with the shoulder moved forward to preclude the inadvertant chambering of a small tolerance 7mmWSM cartridge into a large tolerance 270WSM chamber. Exactly the same scenerio as the 280. Now there was a monumental brain fart! You are correct the .277 is nearly 7mm, it is about .001 oversize. That is of course the bullet diameter and not the bore size. .308=7.82mm, .284= 7.2mm .323= 8.2mm. The only "metric" I can think of that goes by bullet diameter is the 9.3.
