Either your view of the state is horribly paranoid or you need to live in another state. If possible one of the other 37 states that allow civilian silencer ownership. Smiler

A SUPPRESSOR will infact reduce the noicse of a high velocity rifle like a 300 Win Mag to that of about a 22 Magnum, in addition if subsonic loads are used it will infact "silence " the load.

A SILENCER can ONLY be used with subsonic loads, high velocity loads will still infact crack loudly after it breaks the speed of sound.

The magor difference between the two is that the suppressors have large empty chambers BACK over the barrel, BEHIND the muzzle, with silencer baffles infront.

Silencer only have baffles infront of the muzzle

If you guys ever start pushing to make them legal, you'd better make sure you know what your talking about, some of you don't so please get it right.

Do you have an authoritative source for the definitions of silencer, suppressor, moderator, can, muffler or any other words used to describe a device used to reduce the report of a firearm? You have to understand that terms can mean different things in various countries. In the USA for example, the word silencer is used as a legal term by the federal government and most of the states. At the federal level it applies to any device used to reduce the report of a firearm. It is that simple. You can call it by any other name, but if it is intended to reduce gun muzzle noise and does so, it is a silencer. To make things just a bit confusing though, the BATFE allows certain exceptions such as barrel extensions (check out shotgun extension tubes) that are the same size as the bore. While these reduce noise, they are not controlled as silencers.

Rifles using subsonic ammo can not be completely silenced by even the best portable silencer. Subsonic bullets still make flight noise; the action (firing pin, bolt) and muzzle both make noise too. I can hear subsonic bullet humming through the air, they are much less noisy than supersonic ammo making sonic booms, but they are not silent. From the shooter’s position my suppressed AR-15 is louder than my suppressed 308, but from the observer’s position the 308 is obviously louder.

I design and make silencers as a hobby. Some of them extend behind the muzzle; others mount on the muzzle only. Generally, the pistol silencers and ones for any rifle that will tend to heat up a lot all mount on the muzzle. The ones for my subsonic platforms are usually two-point mounted cans that telescope over the barrel.

I made this one for my AR-15.

The top drawing is one for my 510 whisper several years ago. The one in the middle is the same can configured for an Enfield re-barreled to 45 ACP. The bottom drawing is how I would have made the 510 whisper can if I had the experience I have now.

Nice rifle. I plan to build a 9.3x62 for myself on a Sako action.
