I had to fo and check my supply. Guess I'd better go into town and see if I can get a few more boxes. I have one plus an almost full box so I'm not hurtin' too bad. It's funny, but the 7x57 made it's reputation with a 170-175 gr. bullet at about 2200-2300 FPS and now it's not good for anything? Winchester dropped the 175 gr. bullet years ago, I don't think Remington loads that weight anymore and I believe Federal is about the only one still loading bullets of 175 gr. Maybe PMC and S&B might load that weight, but I don't use their ammo, so I don't know. I have quite a few of the older hunting and shooting books in my library, some are originals (darn few dammit!) and most are reprints. However, one book, HUNTING IN THE NORTHWEST by Clyde Ormond (C1948) has an interesting comment on the 7x57 with 175 gr. bullet. He tells of shooting a black bear, which he unfortunately failed to find, with a 7MM Mauser which he called "a powerful cartridge". By his own admission, he said it was a shot he should not have taken as the bear was running away at full tilt. He lost the blood trail in the rain, IIRC. Yet, his statement that the 7x57 was with a 175 gr. bullet a powerful cartridge has always stuck in my mind. Even Elmer Keith liked the 7mm Mauser with that heavy bullet for a ladies gun. I like it too. Paul B. | ||
