I'm thinking about building a light 9.3x62 on a 1909 with a Lyman 35 receiver sight using a Lothar Walther #718 barrel, but I'm a little concerned it may come out too light recoil wise. Recoil of a 9 lb. .338 Win is no problem for me, but this gun should come out quite a bit lighter. Maybe a # 722 would be better?

Get Lothar Walther to do the octagon to round profile with integrated full rib - like the orignal Oberndorf! See the one that was sold recently on classified. Good luck. "When the wind stops....start rowing. When the wind starts, get the sail up quick."

This is my 9.3x62 with a #718 Lothar-Walther barrel on it and NECG furniture. It is light, but not ridiculously so and will be really nice to carry. It just needs a rust blue and some final tweaks to the stock and it will be ready to rock. Hopefully will have it back from the gunsmith here soon and I can comment on recoil for you. If LW is anything like it was last year, be prepared for a long wait time. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

From what I can tell in Sevens picture I would go with the #718. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

Thanks Sevens, we have similar tastes in furniture, I like it! Posted February 18, 2013 1:45 AM Hide Post From what I can tell in Sevens picture I would go with the #718. I guess I agree, just seemed a little light when looking at the dimensions, especially with a .366 hole through it.

Thanks setter! It's definitely a thinner barrel, but nothing ridiculous. I believe the original Type A or B Mauser's in 9.3x62 were even thinner and they seem popular. The rifle as pictured weighs 7 lbs. 6 oz. although I am sure that may change by a few ounces once all said and done. With scope I still expect it to be about 8.5 lbs which will make it a joy to carry (since you carry your rifle more than you shoot it). This rifle is being built to replace pretty much all my other rifles short of my 416. It's trim, slim, hits with authority, and pretty darn good looking, if I do say so myself. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

I figured some where between 7 1/4-7 1/2 lbs., so I guess I was pretty close. Mine will be open sights only, so will weigh about what your's does now. It doesn't hold 70+ grains of powder, so the more I think about it, recoil should be very tolerable. Thanks!

The stock is based off of one of Chris Schofield's patterns at Walnut Grove Gunstocks. He posts here as ChrisTrees. ____________________________ If you died tomorrow, what would you have done today ... 2018 Zimbabwe - Tuskless w/ Nengasha Safaris 2011 Mozambique - Buffalo w/ Mashambanzou Safaris

FWIW, My Husqvarna (model 146?)rechambered to 9.3x62 and equipped with a rear peep sight weighs 7.2#. I can shoot it off the bench with little difficulty, it's fun to plink with from field positions, and recoiless when pointed at game. I believe you're in the ballpark for weight. Best of luck.

I would go the heavier profiled barrel and see if they could increase the thickness for longer at the base which will improve the balance and keep the sights nice and low to the barrel.
