Design a new 7mm Magnum. Take the belt diameter of a 7mm RM at .532" and extend it forward with modern body taper to a 35 degree shoulder and a one caliber neck length. Such a cartridge could provide magnum velocities, full magazine capacity, positive headspacing and fit in a standard length action.

Hagel used the 7mm Mashburn Super and found it good. The market today finds the 7mm RM with very light factory loads for some reason, the 7mm WSM that did not get off and other 7mm mags that are going nowhere.

I see no good mechanical reason for the rebated rims on the WSM's, SAUM's or RUM's either. lets drop the case head diameter down to what feeds from belted chambers and headspace them on the shoulder.

Such a line could start with the 7mm but extend to other calibers.

Some links to 7mm discussions.

That pretty much summs up the 284 Winchester, except for the rebated rim, and it didn't go anywhere either.

If it isn't broke don't fix it. The 7mm Rem Mag is 43 years young and still one of the most popular caliber out there. Good shooting

Why reinvent the wheel? Do we actually need another 7mm cartridge, especially of the magnum variety? IMHO, I see abolutely no need, especially when 7x57, 280 Rem, or 7mm Rem Mag are proven cartridges that work well in a standard long actions, 7-08 for short actions. These cover the 7mm spectrum without excessive recoil or severely reduced barrel life.

7mm Rem Mag is my choice of 7mm's, it don't need any "improvements" as far as I can discern.

If any of the cartridges mentioned (loaded with an appropriate bullet and attaining reasonable velocities) won't do the job of humanely killing appropriate sized game at reasonable distances, get closer.

Ya Know!
I am with the why reinvent the wheel crowd.
And while I really see no mechanical advantage to the rebated rim either, nor do I see a disadvantage.
Now from the stand point of building rifles and ammo , a standard bolt head and shell holder would probably be apealing.
As for making a real nice case for necking up and down for different bore sizes, I think the dakota case is a great Idea...tj3006

Wouldn't that be a 7mm Dakota? I love mine, 7mmSTW in a std. action.
