I have lots of fine rifles.
Everything from 22 Hornet to .338 win and 45/70.
But do to a career change I just don't get to shoot so much. So I am thinking this year,
I might Just work up a load for the .308, using a 150 grain , Barnes ttsx. I have 3 rifles chambered for the round, And it woulod be surprising If I could'nt find a combination that would give a fast accurate load.
I remember a few years back, John Barnsness (hope I spelled it right)did an article about this bullet , And several Montana elk hunters , being very happy. they were using 30,06s so likely pushing the a we bit faster than I will, but for hunting Oregon dear and elk
I think It will work well,, your observations please ? ...tj270win

I've never used that particular bullet, but I agree that , with the right bullet, the 308 (or 30-06) is all anyone needs to confidently hunt anything in North America, and I do mean anything. It's certainly not a backup or stopping round, but it puts bullets where you aim it and kills stuff dead.

From a practical standpoint, it will do about anything the 30-06 will do and that's damn high praise! at least with 150 and 165 gr. bullets. Its slowing down with `180s and not good with 200s and thats where the 06 walks aways from the .308.

I like the .308 Win and I use it for deer and elk when I'm hunting horse back, which is often. My .308 Win. is a Savage 99F with a 3X Leupold and its flat and fits nicely under my leg in a saddle scabbard without me having to jump on the off side stirrup ever so often because my saddle is tilting to the weight of a heavy rifle..I also pack it for a back up rifle on ocassions as its light and handy, or perhaps just because I likt it, it shoots great, and its handy.

Glad to hear your views,
Ray, you have some really cool rifles.
savage 99F in .308, is something I like.
I plan to acquire one in the next couple of years.
Preferably one with a recoil pad added, just cause 99fs in original condition fetch a bunch of money these days.
I looked on my shelf and found about lots of partitions , to try. 150,s by the box !
I have pre 64s in both wincester88 and model 70 as well as a very clean 600 Remington ,
All quality glass , thanks for posting guys !

With that light of a bullet, the .308 is a great choice. The only time I give the edge to the .30-06 (otherwise called the .308 Winchester Magnum) is with the heavier bullets.

It can pretty much do it all, if you want it to.

My "go-to" Deer rifle is a .308 rifle. I own three and have no issues harvesting Deer each Deer season. Mild recoil + accuracy = Venison in the freezer!

I love the .308. I've used it for everything from groudhogs to Gemsbok. Seems to drop everything well. It's accurate, easy on the shoulder and for some reason, it just works every time. I have a heavy barrel Rem 700, a pencil barrel Sako from Finland, and a Browning BLR in that caliber. All are great guns. A fast barnes TSX or X at 150 grns ought to be a slayer. In hopes of avoiding criticism, I must disclose that I have lots of other calibers I like also, including the great '06 (did you hear that - I still love the '06). It took years of counselling before I was confident enough to publicly admit that I like the 308 AND the 30-06. There - I said it.

Go with a 165 gr Aframe at 2,800 fps. Only thing I wouldn't use on would be brown bear and up.
